Why i chose to take a gap year

i graduated high school in may 2024, i always knew i wanted to go to college but when deciding on when and where it always came down to a gap year.

my high school had an option to take dual-credit classes with the community college in my town and i had completed all of the classes, in my course of study, on top of my AP studies. along with the dual-credit classes, the credits would hold for two years after completion. most of the classes i took were in my senior year, i was a fairly good student and received good grades, i placed a bit above average when it came to aptitude tests and state standardized tests. the only issue, in my state my family was considered “low-income” and it was hard to get into certain resources that i needed to get into a good school. my counselor also didn’t help much, he would ‘nudge’ in the right direction but would never actually give clear and concise answers 😒

Many students use this time to travel, work, volunteer, or pursue passions that were sidelined during their academic journey. Additionally, a gap year can alleviate educational burnout, allowing students to return to their studies with renewed motivation and clearer goals. Research shows that students who take a gap year often enjoy enhanced academic performance in college, as they have gained valuable perspectives on their interests and motivations. It's also beneficial in developing soft skills such as adaptability, problem-solving, and communication. However, planning is essential to maximize the benefits of a gap year. Students should consider setting specific goals, whether related to personal growth, career exploration, or simply taking time to relax and recharge. The financial implications also warrant careful thought, as some students may need to work part-time during their break. Engaging in community service or internships can provide direction and build a strong resume. Ultimately, choosing to take a gap year can be a transformative experience, allowing students to grow personally and academically, and to approach their next steps with clarity and confidence.
