Oil cleansing

For years, off and on, I have been trying to oil cleanse. At one point, I used coconut oil with as a part to my double cleansing routine. I tried the Clarins oil cleanser, the Klairs oil cleanser, and one of the most recent oil/balm cleansers I have used has been the Hanskin pore cleansing balm.

I saw so many videos of people using an oil cleanser, rubbing it into their skin for a few minutes, and getting so many benefits from it. This has not been the case for me. I have never had any breakouts from oil cleansing or anything, but this one. Oil cleansing has just not really done anything for my skin.

I wouldn’t say that this balm has given me acne exactly, but after using it, I wind up with lots of tiny irritation bumps. I like to give products the benefit of doubt because sometimes skin needs time to time to acclimate. This product, however has just not worked for me. I gave it a 5/10 because it does remove makeup and I think it could work for some people, just not for me. Sometimes it’s hard to accept that one size does not fit all, but it’s true, and not every product that gave one person glass skin, will do the same for another.

... Read moreIt’s so frustrating when a product that everyone raves about just doesn’t work for your skin, isn't it? My recent experience with the Hanskin Pore Cleansing Balm BHA was exactly that. While it's lauded by many, I was left wondering why I got tiny irritation bumps, especially when it's often recommended for oily skin and concerns like mine. Let’s dive a bit deeper into why this might happen. The BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid) in the Hanskin balm is a fantastic ingredient for exfoliating within the pores, helping to target blackheads and congestion, which sounds perfect for oily skin types. However, sometimes our skin can react differently. BHA, while generally well-tolerated, can be too potent for some, particularly if your skin barrier is compromised or if you’re new to active ingredients. What one person calls 'purging' (a temporary breakout as skin adjusts) can, for another, be genuine irritation if the product is simply not compatible. I always suggest patch-testing new products, especially those with actives, on a small, inconspicuous area of your face for a few days before committing to full-face application. My journey with oil cleansing has been a long one, trying everything from simple coconut oil (which, let's be honest, can be messy and sometimes pore-clogging for some, even if it removes makeup!) to fancier options like Clarins and Klairs. The key difference with a balm or modern oil cleanser like Hanskin's is its ability to emulsify. Unlike pure oils, these formulations contain ingredients that allow them to mix with water, rinsing cleanly without leaving a greasy residue. This is crucial for effective double cleansing and preventing congestion. However, even with great emulsifiers, if the active ingredients or other components aren't a match for your skin, you might still run into trouble. If you find yourself in a similar boat, where an oil cleanser causes irritation, don't despair! Skincare is incredibly personal. Here are a few things to consider: Could it be an ingredient sensitivity? Check the full ingredient list for common irritants like fragrance, essential oils, or specific plant extracts. Could the BHA simply be too strong or too frequent for your skin? Maybe dial back usage or opt for a gentler exfoliating cleanser. For oily skin types still wanting to tackle pores, look for options with PHA (Polyhydroxy Acids), which are milder exfoliants, or simply a well-formulated, non-comedogenic oil cleanser without strong actives. Remember, a product getting a '5/10' from one person doesn't mean it's bad, just that it didn't suit their unique skin. Finding your perfect match often involves a bit of trial and error, but listening to your skin is always the best honest review you can get.
