Shea Moisture
The Shea Moisture Styling Gel is not what I was expecting. This gel is quite thin and sort of reminds me of the texture of like Smuckers squeeze jelly or something.
I really wanted this product because I don’t really like regular gels- I don’t feel that they offer any benefits for my hair beyond styling. I was thinking that this product seemed like it could be good for my hair and help with styling.
I think that this product is okay, but I definitely would not say that it gives a strong hold. If you have type 4 hair, I don’t think this product would do much in the way of styling. My hair is 4a and I found that trying to use this gel to slick my hair down, just ended in it popping right back up and getting puffy again.
Perhaps if you used this after a leave in just to give your hair a bit more definition, it might work for that, but I do think it might flake if combined with certain products.

After my experience with the Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil + Flaxseed Strong Hold Styling Gel, I definitely have some more thoughts to share, especially since it claims to be a 'strong hold' product. When I initially picked up this 'NEW' non-alcohol formula, I was picturing a thicker, more viscous gel that would really lay my edges down or define my curls with significant hold. My 4a hair often needs that extra grip to achieve slick styles, and I was hoping this would be a game-changer for control and hold. However, as I mentioned, its texture is quite thin, almost like a runny syrup. This led me to experiment with it in different ways to see where it truly shines, if at all. For those with looser curl patterns or wavy hair, this gel might actually work wonders for light definition without weighing down your strands. If you're looking for a very soft, flexible hold that doesn't feel crunchy, this could be a good option. I found that applying it to very damp hair, almost soaking wet, helped to encourage some curl clumpage, but it wasn't the kind of definition that would last for days without refreshing. One thing I appreciate about Shea Moisture products is their inclusion of natural ingredients like shea butter, peppermint, and apple cider vinegar. These are generally beneficial for scalp health and hair moisture. The shea butter is known for its moisturizing properties, peppermint can stimulate the scalp, and apple cider vinegar helps balance pH and add shine. While the gel didn't give me the strong hold I was after, it didn't leave my hair feeling stripped or dry, which is a plus for a non-alcohol formula. This makes me think it's designed more for nurturing hair while offering some style support, rather than providing an iron-clad hold. If you're still keen on trying this gel, especially if your hair type is less dense or has a looser curl, here are a few tips I picked up. Instead of using it for a slick back, try applying a small amount as the last step in your wash-and-go routine, right after your leave-in conditioner and cream. This can help seal in moisture and add a touch of definition. I also found that using it sparingly helps prevent the flaking issue I mentioned earlier, which can sometimes occur when mixing products. Focusing on individual sections and then air-drying or diffusing on low heat can also enhance natural curl patterns without relying on a super strong cast. For those like me with very coily hair (type 4 hair), who need serious hold for updos or sleek styles, you might find yourself needing to layer this gel over a stronger holding product, or perhaps look for something with a firmer grip altogether. It’s definitely not a one-and-done solution for intense styling. Think of it more as a light styling aid with good ingredients rather than a true 'strong hold' gel. It's important to set expectations based on your hair's specific needs and not just the product label. Ultimately, while it wasn't what I expected for 'strong hold,' it could still find a place in a natural hair routine for lighter styling needs.
