I miss my sweet Boo Bear

Last summer I lost my best friend after just 3 short years together. He was so cute and little and I really thought he would be around when I got married and had kids and then my kids would grow up with him around…

There is a small chance that he could still be alive out there, but unfortunately it’s not very likely 🥲. I took him outside for some sun and exercise but I turned my back for a minute and he was gone. He had to have gone under the neighbor’s fence. I searched for days in my yard and in the yard next door but to no avail.

To this day, when I hear certain noises in the house, I think it’s him but I have to remind myself that it couldn’t be. It’s been almost a year now but I still catch myself opening the door to my room when I get home and wanting to call out to him😭

I miss him so much!

When you're searching for your 'Boo,' whether it's a tortoise with an iridescent shell or any other beloved companion, the helplessness can be overwhelming. I wanted to share some thoughts on how I've been trying to cope, and perhaps some tips that might help others avoid a similar heartbreak or navigate the difficult journey of losing a pet. First and foremost, allow yourself to grieve. It’s okay to feel the emptiness and to miss them terribly. I still find myself reaching for Boo Bear's spot, or thinking I hear his little movements. Acknowledging this pain instead of pushing it away has been crucial for me. I’ve found comfort in looking through old photos and videos of Boo Bear, remembering his quirky personality and how he loved to sunbathe. Sometimes, just talking about him with friends who understand helps immensely. They don’t try to minimize my grief, but instead validate the deep connection I had with my precious tortoise. It truly helps to know you’re not alone when you intimately feel 'I miss my Boo.' If you’re actively searching for a lost pet, don't give up hope too quickly. While my own search for Boo Bear didn't have a happy ending, I learned a lot about what can be done. Check with neighbors immediately, inform local animal shelters, vets, and even post on community social media groups like Nextdoor or Facebook pet groups. For a tortoise, they can sometimes burrow or hide in unexpected places, so a thorough, methodical search of your yard and surrounding areas – looking under bushes, in dense foliage, or near fences – is vital. Think about where they might seek shelter, especially from predators or extreme weather. Putting up 'lost pet' posters with a clear, recent picture (like one showing Boo Bear's vibrant, rainbow-like shell) and your contact information can sometimes work wonders, as people are more likely to notice and remember a distinct feature. Beyond the immediate search, prevention is key. If I could go back, I would have been much more careful about supervising Boo Bear when he was outside. Investing in a secure, enclosed outdoor space specifically for tortoises, or always having them on a leash/harness if they’re in an open area, is something I now advocate for. Even turning your back for 'just a minute' can be enough time for a curious pet to slip away. Learning from my own experience, I hope others can avoid the same heartache of constantly wondering, 'where is my Boo?' Creating a small memorial or a way to honor your pet can also be very healing. For me, it's those quiet moments remembering Boo Bear, thinking about the joy he brought into my life. Some people plant a tree, create a photo album, or even donate to an animal charity in their pet’s name. It helps turn the missing into a loving memory. This journey of pet loss is deeply personal, but know that you're not alone in feeling this profound sadness when you miss your 'Boo'. Every day gets a little easier, but the love for our lost companions never truly fades. Supporting each other through these tough times, perhaps by sharing stories on platforms like #petsoflemon8 or #imissmyboo, can make a huge difference.
