Product Review - Volition Serum

I recently bought this Volition Skin Rhythm Balancing & Clearing Serum. I was able to buy it during a sale on the Ulta website for $25 (originally $50). I was really excited about it and I had high hopes, but I after trying several different serums that contain niacinamide, I think I should just give up on it all together😭

My skin just does not like niacinamide for whatever reason, but I was hoping that the salicylic acid would be good for my skin. Although my skin hasn’t become especially clear and my pores haven’t gotten any less noticeable, I can’t say that the serum has had any adverse effects. I haven’t had any issues with dryness or irritation since using this product, which is a plus.

I think the packaging gives a high end sort of vibe to it, and I like that. The bottle is made of glass and has a bit of weight to it and it has a dropper applicator. I do wish that the dropper held more product and that it was a bit easier to use.

Overall, I would say that the product is okay, but I would not purchase it again.

... Read moreIt's so interesting how skincare works differently for everyone, isn't it? Just like my recent experience with the Volition Skin Rhythm Balancing & Clearing Serum, where niacinamide just didn't click for my skin. It really highlights that even the most popular ingredients can be hit or miss. If you've also faced similar challenges, or you're curious about finding the right balancing and clearing serum for your unique skin, let's dive a bit deeper than just one product review. My journey with skincare has taught me that sometimes, an ingredient that's a holy grail for others can be a total flop for you. For me, it's often niacinamide. I've noticed that at certain concentrations, or perhaps in certain formulations, it can cause redness or even tiny bumps, which is the opposite of 'clearing'! It’s a common misconception that if a product causes a reaction, it must be 'purging' – but sometimes, it's just plain sensitivity. If you're experiencing similar issues, don't just push through it; your skin is trying to tell you something. Always patch test new products, especially if they contain active ingredients, to see how your skin truly reacts. So, if a product like the Volition serum, or any balancing and clearing serum for that matter, isn't delivering, what are your other options? My goal is always balanced, clearer skin without irritation. Since salicylic acid was in the Volition serum, and it's generally great for pores and blemishes, exploring other salicylic acid products might be a good move if your skin tolerates it well. Beyond that, I've found success with other ingredients for similar concerns: AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids): Think glycolic or lactic acid. These are fantastic for exfoliating the skin's surface, improving texture, and brightening. They can help with pore appearance and overall clarity. I personally love lactic acid for its gentler nature. Bakuchiol: If retinol is too strong, bakuchiol is a plant-derived alternative that offers similar benefits like improving skin texture and reducing fine lines, but with less irritation. While not directly a 'clearing' agent, it contributes to overall healthier skin. Green Tea Extract or Centella Asiatica (Cica): These are my go-to's for soothing and reducing inflammation. Sometimes, 'unbalanced' skin just needs a good dose of calming ingredients. They can help with redness and sensitivity, letting your skin heal and rebalance itself. Zinc PCA: This is an unsung hero for sebum regulation and has anti-inflammatory properties, making it great for oily and blemish-prone skin without being overly drying. It’s definitely something to look for in a balancing serum. It's not just about the star ingredients, though; the entire formulation matters. Some serums might have a high concentration of an active, but if it's in an irritating base with lots of fragrance or essential oils, it could still cause problems. I've learned to scrutinize ingredient lists for potential irritants that aren't necessarily the 'active' you're targeting. Finding the right serum is truly a personalized journey. Don't be discouraged by one 'okay' product review or personal disappointment. Keep experimenting, listening to your skin, and you'll eventually find your perfect match for a clearer, more balanced complexion!
