I’ve never seen this stated so perfectly but the absolute failure to hold public officials to account to the things they actually do on count of people being worse isn’t enabling those worst people to do the worst things
From my personal experience observing political discourse and public reactions, it's clear that failing to critically hold politicians accountable allows extremist ideologies to strengthen unchecked. This opinion piece highlights an important concept: accepting mediocrity in opposition parties doesn't just weaken them, it inadvertently aids those with harmful agendas. I've noticed in discussions that many people hesitate to criticize their preferred politicians for fear that doing so might help the opposition. However, as the text suggests, this tolerance for inaction or ineffective opposition creates an environment where fascist or extremist groups can operate with less resistance. This phenomenon isn't unique to any one country or party but can be seen globally wherever political complacency sets in. Moreover, the idea of having 'a very low bar for what Democrats do' as a metaphor extends beyond party lines; it reflects how lowering expectations for any public official leads to diminished accountability and less effective governance. Without persistent pressure on officials to challenge extremist actions decisively, these groups find leverage to manipulate the system. In my community activism, we've tried to emphasize the importance of vigilant engagement—not only voting but also holding representatives to account for their decisions and effectiveness. It is through collective pressure, clear demands, and refusal to accept minimal efforts that we can create a political environment where extremism does not thrive. This piece serves as a call for activists, voters, and citizens alike to reconsider the strategy of accepting subpar political performance as a pragmatic choice. Instead, it urges stakeholders to push for stronger opposition parties that can effectively counter dangerous ideologies and support policies that genuinely protect democratic values and social justice. Real accountability and active political involvement are crucial tools in this struggle.
