Nationalism is not just thinking that people around you should be OK. It is prioritising a particular political projects aims and goals over human beings rights #greenscreenvideo
From my own observations and experiences, nationalism is often portrayed as a positive force that unites people under a shared identity. However, looking deeper — especially at examples like genocides in Cambodia, Laos, and conflicts affecting millions in regions such as Pakistan, Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq — it becomes clear that nationalism can also fuel extreme actions that disregard basic human rights. It's striking how the idea of 'being cool to care about your country' has shifted over generations. Younger people, especially Gen Z, appear increasingly skeptical of uncritical patriotism because of awareness about the darker consequences nationalism has had historically. This skepticism is important because it encourages us to question not only our attachment to national identity but also the political agendas that sometimes exploit it. Supporting nationalism without scrutiny can, unfortunately, mean endorsing harmful policies or even destructive wars. For instance, the text mentions the continuation of what some describe as illegal and unjustified wars, which can be linked to attempts to maintain certain political apparati tied to nationalist ideals. Personally, I've found that the healthiest approach to nationalism is recognizing the value of caring for one’s country while being vigilant about policies and actions that harm others domestically or abroad. True patriotism should include promoting human rights and justice, not blind allegiance to borders or governments. This discussion also highlights the importance of understanding history comprehensively — acknowledging crimes committed in the name of nationalism helps prevent repeating those mistakes. It’s not about rejecting pride in one’s nation but about balancing it with empathy and ethical responsibility towards all human beings.
