What I’ve learned about pruning 🪴

As a novice gardener (and first time tomato grower), I was nervous about pruning, but I’ve learned it’s the secret to stronger growth and bigger harvests. It’s science and easy to understand: by removing extra leaves & suckers, the plant can focus its energy on healthy fruit instead of overcrowded branches.

💡 What I’ve learned so far:

• Pruning = better airflow 🌬️

• Less risk of disease 🍂

• More sunlight for the tomatoes ☀️

• Quality fruit > wild growth 🍅

This was my first heavy pruning session (or at least more than a few leaves). I am still learning but I learn happily because watching my little plants grow has been a rewarding experience. Think I did a good job? Do you have any pruning tips?

... Read morePruning tomato plants is a critical gardening practice that can dramatically improve plant health and fruit production. By selectively removing excess leaves and suckers—those small shoots that grow between the main stem and branches—gardeners help focus the plant’s energy on producing larger, healthier tomatoes rather than on unnecessary foliage. One of the primary benefits of pruning is improved airflow within the plant’s canopy. Better air circulation reduces humidity, which in turn lowers the risk of fungal diseases such as blight and powdery mildew. These diseases thrive in stagnant, damp environments, so keeping the leaves spaced out is essential for a thriving tomato plant. Sunlight penetration is another key advantage of effective pruning. By trimming overcrowded branches and leaves, sunlight can reach more of the plant’s fruit and leaves, boosting photosynthesis and accelerating ripening. This also helps the fruit develop richer flavor and better color. Quality over quantity is an important principle in pruning tomatoes. While leaving numerous clusters might seem beneficial, overgrowth can lead to smaller fruits and stressed plants. Focused pruning encourages the tomato plant to invest energy in fewer, but more robust and flavorful fruits. Visual cues like the "after pruning" and "bloom view from below" images show how a well-pruned tomato plant appears, with clear, open structures that maximize light and airflow. Novice gardeners should start by removing yellowing or damaged leaves and then proceed to remove suckers below the first flower cluster. For those new to pruning, it’s helpful to use clean, sharp tools to prevent damage and infection, and pruning should be done regularly throughout the growing season to maintain plant health. Additionally, pairing pruning with good watering practices and fertilization enhances overall productivity. Overall, pruning is a simple, science-backed gardening technique that empowers growers of all skill levels to nurture stronger tomato plants and enjoy bigger, tastier harvests.

I prune almost all but leave one or two would be great because pruning the suckers increases flavour in the tomato fruits

It’s important to prune your tomato plant so they have a chance to develop more roots and or a larger root system resulting in tones of growth
