Power Couple: The benefits of companion planting

🌱Companion planting🌱

This has been an interesting concept to learn. Because of their stillness, it’s not uncommon to feel as though plants’ environments interact with them rather than them with their environments. The garden comes with many challenges and companion planting can aide with some of those! Let’s discuss the benefits of companion planting:

1. Pest control → Some plants repel bugs that would otherwise munch on their neighbors.

2. Pollinator attraction → Flowers/herbs bring in bees & beneficial insects.

3. Nutrient balance → Some plants pull nutrients deep from the soil, others fix nitrogen.

4. Microclimate → Tall plants give shade, ground cover reduces weeds, etc.

5. Flavor boost (this one is debated in the science community but the old guard swear by it).

With all of that on the table, it wasn’t long before I started strategizing about which would be my first pairing. I figured we would start with a tasty classic: basil and tomato.

Here’s what I did:

🪴I grew basil from seed separately from the tomato.

🍅 Bought a small tomato plant, transplanted & stabilized. I also grew some from seed separately from the basil.

🌱Cared for the plants separately until my basil reached juvenile stage (4-6 weeks), and at this point, united them.

Next season, I’d like to re-create this as well as try pairing up parsley with the tomatoes! Might even do an experiment 🧪(parsley vs. basil vs. control). Have you ever tried companion planting? What pairings have you tried?

... Read moreCompanion planting is a gardening technique where two or more plant species are grown in close proximity to benefit each other in various ways. One of the most popular combinations is basil and tomato, often referred to as a "power couple" in the garden. This pairing illustrates the multiple advantages companion planting can bring to your garden ecosystem. Firstly, pest control is one of the most celebrated benefits. Certain plants like basil naturally repel harmful insects that would otherwise damage neighboring plants like tomatoes. This reduces the need for chemical pesticides, promoting a healthier and more organic growing environment. Attracting pollinators is another vital benefit. Flowers and aromatic herbs such as basil lure beneficial insects including bees and predatory bugs that aid in pollination and further pest control. Nutrient management also plays a crucial role. Some plants have the ability to fix nitrogen in the soil, enriching it for their companions. Others can draw nutrients from deeper soil layers, making these available indirectly to shallower-rooted plants. Combining species with complementary nutrient needs helps maintain soil fertility naturally. Creating a microclimate is another advantage. Taller plants can shade their shorter partners from harsh sunlight, while ground covers reduce weed growth and prevent moisture loss. This synergy supports healthier plants and increased yields. While some gardeners and traditional wisdom argue that companion planting can also boost flavor, scientific evidence remains inconclusive. However, many experienced gardeners swear by the enhanced taste of tomatoes when grown alongside basil. In practice, growing basil and tomatoes separately until basil reaches the juvenile stage (4-6 weeks) before uniting them helps ensure that both plants establish strong root systems and avoid competition early on. This staged approach supports their optimal growth when planted together. Beyond basil and tomato, gardeners often experiment with other companions such as parsley, which might offer similar or different benefits. Conducting simple controlled experiments—such as comparing parsley vs. basil with tomatoes—can provide personal insights into the best pairings for your garden. Companion planting is a flexible, low-maintenance, and sustainable technique that beginner gardeners can easily incorporate to improve their garden health and productivity. Understanding the natural interactions among plants enables you to harness these benefits, creating a flourishing garden ecosystem with enhanced pest resistance, pollination support, nutrient balance, microclimate improvements, and potentially better flavor.

Bulbs come in all shapes and sizes—and their ideal planting depth depends on how big they are! The golden rule? Spring bulbs should go in the ground 2–3 times as deep as their total height (top to bottom). That means tiny bulbs get a shallower spot, while big bulbs need to be tucked deeper down. No
