Benefits of cat grass (how to grow for your cats!)
No soil needed!!! Cat grass isn’t just a cute plant for your windowsill…it’s packed with benefits for your furry friend:
✅ Aids Digestion – Cat grass helps cats naturally process hairballs and keeps their digestion moving smoothly.
✅ Natural Fiber Boost – Full of fiber that supports a healthy gut.
✅ Safe Alternative to Houseplants – Gives your cat a safe, non-toxic green snack (instead of your prized houseplants 🌿).
✅ Stress Relief – Chewing grass can calm anxious cats and keep them entertained.
✅ Fresh Greens Year-Round – Easy to grow indoors, so your cat has access to healthy greens no matter the season.
If you’re a plant parent and a cat parent, you know the struggle. My cat kept munching on my houseplants (😭 my poor leaves!) so I needed a safe alternative that would keep her happy and protect my greenery. Enter cat grass (I love when the solutions to my problems just lean me further into my obsessions)!
Growing cat grass is simple, & can be affordable when the right materials are used (no soil needed!) as purchasing from pet stores and grocery stores can get pricey ($4-$10 for a week of fresh grass). It’s also a rewarding way to enrich your cat’s life. Mine LOVES it! 🐱🩷
💚Materials: (transparency disclaimer: purchasing from these links earns me a small commission)
-Hydroponic growing container
Purchased from: Amazon
💵 Price: $11
-Cat grass seeds
Purchased from: Amazon
💵 Price: $7 /bag
💚Prep:
-Determine how many seeds you need (I used 1/4 cup)
-Soak seeds for 8-12 hours
💚How to:
🌱Step 1: Spread your cat grass seeds across the tray in a single, even layer (enough to cover the surface, but not piled too high).
🌱Step 2: Fill the base with water; the top tray should sit above the water line so seeds stay damp but not submerged.
🌱Step 3: Place the tray on top, making sure the roots will reach through the slots as they grow.
🌱Step 4: Keep the water level topped up and rinse the seeds daily for the first few days to prevent mold.
🌱Step 5: In about 4–7 days you’ll have lush, fresh cat grass ready for your kitty to snack on! 🐱💚
✨ Pro tip: I have two of these containers so they’re on rotation & my cat always has fresh greens.

Growing cat grass hydroponically is not only soil-free but also reduces the risk of pests and mold if managed correctly. From the OCR insights, soaking the seeds for 8 to 12 hours (but not exceeding 24 hours) activates germination, while draining the excess water prevents seed rot. It’s essential to cover the seeds loosely with a paper towel and keep them in an indirectly bright area, balancing light exposure to promote strong growth without drying out the seeds. Daily rinsing of the seeds for the first 2 to 3 days keeps mold at bay, which is a common challenge when growing fresh greens indoors for pets. Around day 3, removing the cover allows airflow, while continuing to change the water daily maintains cleanliness and supports healthy root development. Cat grass, often wheatgrass, is packed with enzymes and nutrients that may contribute to helping cats expel hairballs and support gut motility, especially in indoor cats prone to hair ingestion. Offering your cat fresh greens also mimics natural grazing behaviors that can alleviate boredom and anxiety, promoting mental wellbeing. Investing in two hydroponic trays and rotating them ensures a continuous supply of fresh cat grass, avoiding empty trays and keeping your cat interested. This routine also supports sustainable pet care, as growing your own cat grass significantly cuts down on the recurring cost of store-bought options, which can be $4 to $10 per week. If you notice signs of mold or foul smell, reducing soak time or improving air circulation around the trays can help. Additionally, avoid exposing the grass to direct sunlight to prevent excessive heat damage. Beyond the health benefits, growing cat grass can deepen your bond with your pet while protecting your houseplants from being nibbled. Have you tried any unique setups or different types of seeds? Sharing your experience can help other #catparents create the perfect fresh greens oasis for their cats.
