New York’s Prettiest Library | Things To Do in NYC

New York Public Library - Stephen A. Schwarzman Building

My favorite part of this library is the architecture. I mean look at it , it’s absolutely stunning. Aside from being a beautiful building with Instagram worthy photo ops it is actually a functioning library.

There are several reading rooms where you can quietly read or study. The reading rooms are very quiet even though this is a tourist spot. Tourist seem to stick to the exhibits and long airy corridors.

You can not browse books here ! If there is something on site you wish to see you must reserve a time. The librarians will send for it . Keep in mind this is a research library !

There is also a book store and cafe on site!

It is located right near Bryant Park in Midtown Manhattan .

... Read moreWhen I first planned my trip to the New York Public Library's Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, I knew it was iconic, but nothing prepared me for the sheer grandeur. Walking up from Bryant Park, the Beaux-Arts architecture truly takes your breath away. The grand exterior with its majestic columns and sculptures stands proudly, a testament to timeless design amidst the modern skyscrapers of Midtown Manhattan. I spent a good twenty minutes just admiring the façade, trying to capture the perfect shot of the building, especially those famous lion statues often associated with its entrance – they’re even more impressive in person! It’s such a perfect backdrop for photos, and I'd recommend visiting in the morning for softer light if you're keen on photography like I am. Stepping inside, the awe continues. The first thing that greets you is Astor Hall, and it’s truly magnificent. My eyes immediately went to the elegant interior marble staircase with its ornate brass handrails. It's an absolute dream for anyone who appreciates historic design. I actually found myself just standing there for a moment, taking it all in, imagining all the history that has unfolded within these walls. The way the light filters through the windows and illuminates the marble creates such a serene and inspiring atmosphere. It’s definitely one of the most stunning architectural features I've ever seen, and a must-capture for your Instagram feed. Don't rush through this space; take your time to appreciate the intricate details of the arched hallway and the craftsmanship. While the exterior and Astor Hall are undeniably tourist magnets, I also loved exploring the quieter, more functional parts of this research library. I learned that the Irma and Paul Milstein Division is one of the designated areas for research and quiet study, and it truly offers a peaceful escape. Though you can't browse shelves freely, the experience of being in such a historic space, surrounded by serious scholars, is incredibly stimulating. If you're planning to spend some time here for research, remember to reserve your materials in advance – it makes the process so much smoother. It's a different kind of beauty, not just visual, but intellectual. Beyond the main attractions, take a moment to explore the less-obvious corners. The library is filled with intricate details, from the carved ceilings to the elaborate archways, that tell a story of New York's rich cultural history. Finding a quiet nook to simply observe the architectural details or people-watch can be just as rewarding as seeing the main highlights. Overall, whether you're a history buff, an architecture enthusiast, or just looking for a beautiful and inspiring place to visit in NYC, the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building offers so much more than just books. It's a journey through design, history, and a vibrant hub of knowledge, right in the heart of Midtown Manhattan near Bryant Park. Seriously, add this to your NYC itinerary – you won't regret it!
