... Read moreOkay, so after my first visit to the Museum of the City of New York, I'm genuinely blown away and already planning my next trip back! I wanted to share a deeper dive into what made this experience so special, especially for anyone wondering what 'things to do' there besides just walking through. One of the absolute highlights for me was the immersive dance exhibit. You step onto this vibrant floor and suddenly you're learning about the incredible history of dance in NYC. I spent ages exploring the 'Forms of Vogue' section – it's not just a display, but a real deep dive into the culture. They explained the 'Old Way' of vogue, which was all about sharp lines and poses inspired by fashion magazines, and then contrasted it with the fluid 'New Way' characterized by moves like the 'duckwalk' and impressive contortions. And 'Vogue Femme'? It truly celebrates femininity with its dramatic body language and storytelling. It made me realize how much artistry and history are embedded in these dance forms, and I even tried a few steps myself! It’s such an unexpected and interactive way to connect with the city's artistic heritage. Then there was the powerful Shirley Chisholm exhibit. Her words truly resonated: 'I'm going to be controversial 'til the day I die! Because I'm a catalyst for change, and I believe in stirring up people, and making people think, and making people realize that they have to move.' Reading that quote, I felt a deep connection to her spirit and her fight for change. It's more than just historical facts; it's an inspiring call to action that feels incredibly relevant even today. The exhibit beautifully chronicles her journey and impact, reminding visitors of her pioneering role in American politics and social justice. Beyond these incredible exhibits, I’ve got some extra tips for making the most of your visit to the Museum of the City of New York. As mentioned, Wednesdays are free for everyone, which is fantastic value, but it can also mean bigger crowds, so plan accordingly! If you prefer a quieter experience, a weekday morning might be your best bet, even if you pay the $23 adult admission. The museum's location is truly unbeatable – right on 5th Ave and directly across from Central Park. This means you can easily spend half a day at the museum and then enjoy a beautiful walk or picnic in the park. Don't forget there's a cafe on-site for a quick coffee or snack, but if you're looking for a full meal, the surrounding Upper East Side neighborhood has some charming spots. I recommend budgeting at least 2 to 3 hours to truly explore everything without feeling rushed. It's a treasure trove of NYC history and culture, definitely worth more than just a quick stop!
