Seward Park | Things to do in NYC

Seward Park

This beautiful park is located in the heart of Chinatown . It is on Canal and Essex. Right near the F train at East Broadway.

It’s a nice relaxing park. You can sit on the bench and read . Or watch your kiddos run around the playground. There are even basketball and tennis courts ! It is walking distance from a New York Public Library if you need a break from the heat.

It’s literally the perfect place! You should check it out next time you are in the Lower East Side

... Read moreI recently spent a fantastic afternoon at Seward Park, and let me tell you, it's quickly become one of my favorite spots in the city! If you're looking for a peaceful escape right in the bustling heart of Chinatown and the Lower East Side, this is it. It's more than just a green space; it's a vibrant hub where the community truly comes alive. Beyond just a quick stroll, there’s so much more to experience. I love starting my visit by walking along the long, paved pathways that gracefully wind through the park. They're perfect for a leisurely walk, a refreshing jog, or even just a contemplative stroll. As you wander, you’ll notice the serene beauty created by the tall, leafy trees that provide ample shade, making even warm summer days pleasant. I often find myself taking a moment on one of the many sturdy benches strategically placed throughout the park, just soaking in the atmosphere and people-watching. It’s truly amazing how easy it is to momentarily forget you’re in the middle of bustling Manhattan. For families, the colorful children's playground is an absolute lifesaver and a major highlight. I've seen countless happy kids enjoying the various play structures – from classic swings and exhilarating slides to challenging climbing frames and interactive elements. It’s a safe and engaging environment for children of all ages. This lively area is beautifully framed by lush green trees, giving it a natural, almost secluded feel despite its urban location. I particularly appreciated seeing the clear dark green sign for Seward Park Playground, which thoughtfully lists the rules and operating hours in English, Chinese, and Spanish. This multilingual approach truly reflects the diverse community it serves. The secure black metal fence around the playground also offers parents peace of mind, allowing kids to play freely. But Seward Park isn't just for relaxation and little ones. If you're into sports, the basketball and tennis courts are almost always buzzing with activity. I’ve often stopped to watch a friendly pickup game or two – the energy is incredibly infectious! It's a great place to get some exercise or simply enjoy the competitive spirit. And for those hot NYC summer days, the proximity to a New York Public Library branch is a real bonus. It’s perfect for a cool-down break, maybe even to grab a new book to enjoy back on a shaded park bench. Getting there is an absolute breeze, especially if you're utilizing public transport. The F train to East Broadway drops you off practically at the park's doorstep, making it incredibly convenient. For anyone already in the Lower East Side or Chinatown, it's completely walkable, making it an ideal impromptu destination for a dose of nature. My top tip for visiting? Make it a full experience! Grab a delicious bubble tea, a savory dumpling, or a freshly baked pastry from one of the many amazing local shops in Chinatown before heading into the park. It makes for the perfect park snack or a delightful picnic. Whether you're looking for a quiet corner to read and reflect, a vibrant spot for kids to play and make new friends, or a place to enjoy some outdoor sports and soak up the local culture, Seward Park truly offers something for everyone. It's a genuine community hub and definitely worth adding to your NYC itinerary. You won't regret discovering this wonderful urban oasis!
