Ingredients
Dry •
3½ cups all-purpose flour • 2¼ tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast • ¾ cup granulated sugar • 1½ tsp freshly ground cardamom (key flavor!) • ½ tsp salt
Wet •
¾ cup whole milk • 4 tbsp unsalted butter • 1 large egg, room temperature • 1 tsp vanilla extract.
(For topping (optional) • 1 egg beaten with 1 tbsp milk (egg wash) • Pearl sugar or sliced almonds

Instructions
1. Warm the milk • Heat milk and butter together until warm (about 105–110°F / warm to the touch). • Butter should be melted, not bubbling. 2. Activate the yeast • In a large bowl, combine warm milk mixture and yeast. • Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy. 3. Mix the dough • Add sugar, egg, vanilla, cardamom, and salt. • Stir in flour gradually until a soft dough forms. 4. Knead • Knead by hand or mixer for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. • Dough should be soft but not sticky. 5. First rise • Place in a lightly greased bowl. • Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1–1½ hours, until doubled. 6. Shape • Punch down dough. • Shape into a loaf or braid (traditional and beautiful). • Place in a greased loaf pan or on parchment-lined baking sheet. 7. Second rise • Cover and let rise 30–45 minutes until puffy. 8. Bake • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). • Brush with egg wash, sprinkle topping if using. • Bake 30–35 minutes until golden and fragrant.
