What we should have named her

How do you pick pet names? Do you have them planned? Here’s how cookie got hers…

After our cat bean had the kittens we had to wait to see if they were male or female. Us never having cats before we couldn’t really tell. We honestly thought we had all male cats. The minute i seen cookie i automatically thought oh my god it looks like chocolate chip cookie dough. Obviously that’s a mouth fool so we shortened it to chip. After we found out she was a girl we switch it to cookie.

Now that i show her to people they mentioned she has Halloween colors in her. Me being the Halloween freak i am, i amso embarrassed cause why didn’t i see it?! We should have named her pumpkin.

When we first met our little calico furball, she was just the sweetest kitten, and 'Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough' just popped into my head because of her gorgeous markings. We shortened it to 'Chip,' then 'Cookie,' and it felt right. She was this tiny thing with beautiful white, orange, and black patches – truly a stunning mix from day one. But now, looking at her unique blend of white, orange, and black fur, I can't help but think about how perfect 'Pumpkin' would have been! My friends keep pointing out her undeniable 'Halloween colors,' and I'm still kicking myself for not seeing it sooner. It’s definitely a case of hindsight being 20/20! Speaking of names, is 'Cookie' a good name for a cat? I get asked that a lot. Honestly, I think it's adorable and suits her sweet personality perfectly. Plus, it's short, easy for her to recognize, and just makes me smile every time I say it! I've always loved food-themed names for pets – they're often so quirky and memorable. I’ve heard of cats named 'Muffin,' 'Biscuit,' 'Waffles,' and even 'Tiramisu'! They add a little extra charm, don't they? What do you all think about food names? Do you have any pets with delicious-sounding monikers? Choosing a name for your new cat is such a personal and sometimes even comical journey, and it's easy to get overwhelmed with all the options. My biggest tip? Spend some quality time observing your new kitten or cat. Their personality, their distinct markings (like my calico's tri-color coat!), or even a funny quirk they develop can spark the perfect name. For calico cats, their distinctive white, orange, and black fur often inspires a whole range of names. Many owners lean towards names related to autumn, fire, or even delicious treats, just like me! Think 'Autumn,' 'Blaze,' 'Cinnamon,' 'Ginger,' or even 'Candy' for a sweet touch. If I had truly embraced her 'Halloween colors' earlier, 'Pumpkin' or 'Spice' would have been at the top of my list for sure, perhaps even 'Hazel' for her warm tones. Another thing I learned is that it's okay to try out a few names. We went from 'Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough' to 'Chip' to 'Cookie' before settling. Sometimes a name feels right, but then after a few days, you realize it’s not quite 'the one.' Don't rush it! Say the name aloud, see how your cat responds, and make sure it rolls off your tongue. A good cat name should be easy to pronounce and not too similar to commands or other household pets' names. And remember, almost all calico cats are female, so you can lean into those beautiful feminine names too! Ultimately, whether your cat is a 'Cookie,' a 'Pumpkin,' or something entirely unique, the most important thing is the love and bond you share. But it's always fun to look back and laugh at the naming process, or wonder about the 'what ifs.' What’s your pet naming story? Did you have a name planned, or did it just come to you? I'd love to hear if anyone else has had a naming regret, or a name that perfectly captured their pet's essence. Share your stories in the comments below! Maybe it will inspire someone else picking out their next furry family member, or at least give us all a good giggle.
