🎧 wrap my earbuds w/ me!
this actually took me like 7 hours to finish haha
i’m really happy with how it turned out though!
Hey everyone! So, you saw my wrapped earbuds and maybe wondered how I managed to get them looking so cute and custom? Well, it was a labor of love (seriously, 7 hours!), but totally worth it. If you're tired of tangled wires or just want to add a personal touch to your gear, wrapping your wired earbuds is such a fun and rewarding DIY project. Especially for those of us rocking classic Apple EarPods with the Lightning Connector, adding a bit of flair and protection can make a huge difference. Why even bother, you ask? For me, it's a mix of aesthetics and practicality. First, it makes your plain old earbuds, like my new Apple wired earbuds, stand out. No more confusing them with a friend's! Second, and arguably more important, it adds a layer of protection to the delicate wires, which can prolong their life. We all know how easily those wires can fray, especially near the jack or the actual earbud itself. Plus, the slightly thicker, wrapped cord is less prone to getting into those frustrating knots in your bag. Ready to give it a try? Here's how I did mine, with some tips I picked up along the way. What you'll need: Your wired earbuds (of course!) Embroidery floss or thin yarn in colors you love Sharp scissors Optional: A tiny dab of super glue or clear nail polish for securing ends My Step-by-Step Wrapping Method: Prep Your Earbuds: Make sure your earbuds are clean and free of kinks. If you're dealing with a brand new pair, even better! I started with my new Apple wired earbuds. Choose Your Starting Point: I like to begin near the 3.5mm jack or, if you have newer models, near the Lightning Connector. This area often experiences the most stress, so wrapping here first makes sense. Tie your first piece of floss securely around the wire, leaving a short tail you can wrap over later to hide. The Basic Wrap: This is where the magic happens! Hold the floss at an angle against the earbud wire. You'll then begin wrapping the floss tightly around the earbud wire, ensuring each loop snugs up against the last. The goal is to cover the earbud wire completely, creating a smooth, even surface. I found that consistent tension is key here – too loose and it'll unravel; too tight and it might warp the wire. Color Changes & Patterns: This is where you can get creative! To change colors, simply tie off the old color with a small knot, trim the excess, and then start wrapping with your new color, covering the knot as you go. You can do stripes, spirals, or even intricate patterns if you're feeling ambitious. Dealing with the Split: When you reach the point where the single wire splits into two (one for each earbud), you have a couple of options. You can continue wrapping both wires together for a short distance to create a reinforced section, or you can wrap each individual wire separately from that point on. I chose to wrap each side separately, as I wanted distinct aesthetics for each earbud. Wrapping the Individual Wires: Continue your wrapping technique all the way up to the base of each earbud. Be extra careful around the delicate parts where the wire enters the earbud housing. Finishing Off: Once you've reached the desired end point (usually right before the earbud itself), tie a secure knot. For extra durability, you can add a tiny drop of super glue or clear nail polish to this final knot to prevent it from coming undone. Trim any excess floss neatly. Pro Tips from My Experience: Tangle Prevention: The thicker, wrapped cord is naturally less prone to tangling. However, I still make sure to wrap my earbuds neatly when storing them. Material Choice: Embroidery floss is fantastic because it comes in thousands of colors and is durable. Thinner yarn can also work but might result in a bulkier wrap. Patience is Key: Seriously, it took me hours! Don't rush it. Put on some music, watch a show, and enjoy the process. The results are super satisfying. Protecting Your RBUDS: This wrapping method isn't just for looks; it genuinely adds durability. I feel much better about tossing my custom RBUDS into my bag now, knowing they have that extra layer of protection. I hope this helps you create your own unique and protected wired earbuds! It's a small project that makes a big impact on both the look and longevity of your tech.
