Being a pharmacy tech & immigrant 🇺🇸

Easy way of how to become a Pharmacy Technician in the U.S.:

1. Have a high school diploma or GED

2. Complete a pharmacy tech training program (optional but recommended).

3. Pass the PTCB or ExCPT certification exam.

4. Apply for a state license (if required in your state).

5. Get hired and start working as a pharmacy technician.

📌New York One of the great parts about becoming a Pharmacy Technician is that I didn’t need to validate any documents from my home country or previous degree. I was able to get the job, start training right away, and learn everything on the job. My work has supported my learning and growth every step of the way.

👍Pros :

- Quick entry into the workforce

- Flexible work environments

- Stable income

🤔Cons:

Too much stress 😭

... Read moreBuilding on my initial journey to becoming a pharmacy technician here in the US, I wanted to dive deeper into some of the practical aspects of the job and address questions I often get. Many people wonder, 'What does a pharmacy tech actually do all day?' and 'Are there specific training programs that can really help?' One of the most crucial and hands-on parts of my day involves filling prescriptions. It's not just about grabbing bottles from the shelves – it's a careful, multi-step process that directly impacts patient safety. I remember when I first started, seeing that refrigerator filled with various medication boxes, it felt a little overwhelming. But with good on-the-job training, you quickly learn the ropes. Typically, a prescription comes in – either electronically, by phone, or from a patient. My role often includes entering patient information and prescription details accurately into the system. Then comes the actual dispensing: locating the correct medication, counting or measuring the precise dose, labeling it correctly, and preparing it for the pharmacist's final check. Accuracy is paramount, especially when handling different strengths and formulations. It's a skill that improves with experience, and I've found it incredibly rewarding to know I'm directly helping people access the medications they need. Beyond the basic requirements like a high school diploma, choosing the right training program can make a big difference. While some states allow you to get certified primarily through on-the-job training, a formal program can provide a solid foundational knowledge, especially if you're like me and didn't have a background in healthcare from your home country. There are many options out there, from community college courses to vocational schools and online programs. One option that often comes up in discussions is the Penn Foster Pharmacy Technician Program. Online programs like Penn Foster offer flexibility, which can be invaluable, especially if you're balancing work or family commitments. They typically cover pharmacology, pharmacy law, medical terminology, and practical skills. When I was researching, I looked for programs that were accredited and offered a clear path to sitting for the PTCB or ExCPT certification exams, as that was my ultimate goal. It's worth comparing curricula, costs, and student support to find the best fit for your learning style. While my original post touched on the 'too much stress' con, I want to expand on the overall job satisfaction and growth I've experienced. Yes, there are busy, high-pressure days, especially when we're short-staffed or dealing with complex patient issues. But seeing the positive impact we have on patients' lives, whether it's helping them understand their new medication or simply providing a friendly face, is incredibly rewarding. The on-the-job training continues throughout your career; there's always something new to learn, new medications, and new protocols. I've also found that the role offers opportunities for advancement. With more experience and sometimes additional certifications, you can move into specialized roles like sterile compounding, inventory management, or even training new technicians. It's truly a dynamic field where your skills are always in demand, contributing to that sense of a 'stable income' I mentioned earlier. It’s definitely a career where you can grow if you're committed.
