These were the easiest, most magical stops I did.
📍 City/Country: Kyoto, Japan
Location: Japan Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama
Location: Kiyomizu, Kyoto
Location: Mt.Fuji Ropeway, Hakone, Japan
If you're planning your first trip to Japan, exploring Kyoto and Hakone offers an amazing blend of natural beauty, history, and cultural experiences that truly capture the essence of Japan. Start your adventure at Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama, where you can enjoy a unique interaction with wild Japanese macaques roaming freely in their natural habitat. Unlike typical zoos, here humans enter a designated enclosed area, and the monkeys walk around freely, allowing for an up-close experience. Visitors can feed the monkeys or watch them play while taking in the beautiful views of Kyoto from the park's hillside location. Next, immerse yourself in traditional Japanese culture with a matcha tea ceremony. This slow and intentional ritual invites you to learn how matcha powder is whisked and appreciate the subtleties of holding and drinking from the tea bowl. The ceremony offers a calm, grounded moment that taps into centuries of Japanese history, providing a peaceful break from sightseeing. For a comforting taste of local cuisine, try Omurice—a beloved Japanese comfort food consisting of a fluffy, lightly runny omelet enveloping seasoned fried rice, topped with either demi-glace sauce or ketchup. Often considered a nostalgic home-cooked dish, sampling Omurice in Osaka—the food capital of Japan—feels like a bucket-list culinary experience. Finally, be sure to visit Hakone for breathtaking views of Mt. Fuji. Even without the ropeway ride, the sight of Japan's iconic peak framed against clear blue skies is unforgettable. The Hakone Ropeway itself is highly recommended for those with extra time, as it offers panoramic views from above that many describe as surreal. Hakone also boasts tranquil hot springs and scenic spots perfect for unwinding after your cultural explorations. Together, these stops create a well-rounded first trip itinerary that balances nature, culture, food, and awe-inspiring landscapes. With these insights, your journey to Japan will be both magical and memorable, setting a wonderful foundation for deeper exploration in the future.
