My recent summer vacation trip to Monterey Bay, Carmel, and the iconic 17-Mile Drive was absolutely unforgettable, and I just had to share more of the magic! While the main route itself is breathtaking, there are so many little details and stops that truly make the experience. Before we even reached the famous coastline, we made a unique detour that added a fun flavor to our road trip: a visit to Garlic World in Gilroy, California. It was an experience in itself, exploring a farm dedicated entirely to garlic! They boast an incredible variety of garlic products, and yes, even garlic-flavored ice cream. I have to admit, I wasn't brave enough for the ice cream, but it was fascinating to see all the different ways garlic can be enjoyed. Later, for a more traditional meal, we stopped at California Pizza Kitchen. Their lettuce wraps were a fresh start, followed by comforting shrimp fettuccine and some delicious pizza – the perfect fuel before our scenic adventure began. The 17-Mile Drive itself truly lives up to its reputation. Kicking off the tour, the ocean views immediately steal your breath away. Every single stop along the route felt like stepping into a painting, with dramatic coastlines, crashing waves, and pristine beaches. The beauty is just astounding, and you'll find yourself pulling over constantly for photos. A highlight, of course, was seeing the majestic Cypress trees, especially the legendary Lone Cypress. Standing proudly on its rocky perch for close to 250 years, it’s a marvel of nature. I learned something fascinating there: the dense fog that often blankets this region is actually essential for these ancient plants to grow and thrive in this unique climate. It gives you a deeper appreciation for the natural wonders you’re witnessing. After soaking in all that coastal beauty, we ventured into Carmel-by-the-Sea. This charming town is like something out of a European fairytale, with its quaint cottages, art galleries, and lovely boutiques. We made sure to stop at the English Candy Store, also known as Cottage of Sweets, a delightful spot to pick up some treats. And because no good exploration is complete without a coffee break, we also popped into Carmel Valley Coffee to enjoy a warm drink. These small stops really added to the cozy, welcoming vibe of Carmel. Exploring Monterey Bay, Carmel, and the 17-Mile Drive in one day is totally doable and incredibly rewarding. From the natural splendor of the coastline and ancient trees to the delicious food stops and charming towns, it's a journey I'd recommend to anyone looking for a memorable California experience. Every moment was filled with beauty and discovery, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Don't forget your camera!
