kicking off my first lemon8 post with a lemon deer

hello, I am Kerry, my artist identity is With Teeth, I am a self taught oil Painter, I started when I was about 15, I am now 27. I love to paint nature inspired art, dark art, and portraits including pets. I love the macabre as much as the whimsical. I am hoping to get my work out there so that I never have to work a 9-5 again and I can paint all day and spend time alone as a little hermit in my cottage (I don't have this yet ;)

let me know your thoughts on my work and please feel free to reach out if you'd like to own some of my work or have something made for you.

thanks for reading! ❤️

... Read moreSo many of you have asked about my journey as a self-taught artist, and I'm thrilled to share more about how I navigate diverse styles and continue my artistic exploration! When I first started at 15, picking up oil painting entirely on my own felt like a huge mountain to climb. There were no formal classes, just a burning passion and a lot of trial and error. I devoured online tutorials, studied master paintings, and spent countless hours experimenting with colors and techniques. It really is incredible what you can learn when you're truly dedicated and just keep practicing. One of the most exciting parts of being self-taught is the freedom to explore without feeling confined to one genre. This is precisely why my portfolio ranges from serene, nature-inspired art to deeply evocative dark art, and even whimsical pet portraits. For instance, the 'lemon deer' oil painting I recently shared is a perfect example of blending that nature-inspired theme with a touch of the whimsical. Seeing that yellow fawn curled up on a light wooden panel, with its unique spots and visible brushstrokes, truly captures the spirit of connecting with nature in a slightly fantastical way. It's about finding beauty in both the light and the shadows, letting imagination guide the brush, and allowing diverse influences to shape each piece. This continuous push to explore different aesthetics — be it the macabre or the purely joyful — keeps my artistic journey fresh and authentic. My inspiration comes from everywhere – a quiet walk in the woods, an ancient folktale that sparks a new idea, or even just the unique character in a beloved pet's eyes. I believe this constant exploration is absolutely key to developing a unique artistic voice. If you're a self-taught artist out there feeling a bit lost or wondering how to develop your own diverse styles, my biggest piece of advice is to wholeheartedly embrace experimentation. Don't be afraid to try new mediums, new subjects, or even entirely new color palettes. Those 'mistakes' are often where the most exciting discoveries happen, leading to unexpected and beautiful outcomes. I’ve learned to trust my instincts and let my work evolve naturally, allowing each piece to tell its own story within my broader artistic narrative. For anyone looking to dive deeper into their own artistic exploration, consider keeping a dedicated sketchbook just for trying out different styles. One day, challenge yourself to paint something purely macabre; the next, try a bright, airy landscape. You could even attempt a portrait of a fantastical creature. This kind of deliberate practice helps you understand your strengths, identify what truly resonates with your artistic soul, and pushes your boundaries. It’s a continuous journey of learning and growing, and every brushstroke, every visible brushstroke, brings you closer to mastering your unique craft. Remember, art is about expressing yourself in countless ways, and there's no single right path to get there. Keep creating, keep exploring, and let your unique vision shine across all the diverse styles you discover!
