Life as an AA/EA

Is it weird that I’ve always wanted to be the executive assistant and not the executive?

Because I like the chaos behind the scenes, not just sitting in the spotlight. I like keeping everything moving, solving problems before anyone even notices them, and being the person who makes things actually work.

• managing the calendar that everyone else depends on

• staying ten steps ahead of the day

• fixing problems quietly before they become problems

• being trusted with the details that keep everything running

• making busy days look effortless (even when they are not)

Maybe I don’t want to be the one in charge of everything… I just want to be the one who makes sure everything gets done right.

... Read moreWorking as an executive assistant (EA) is often misunderstood as just handling calendars or taking notes, but from personal experience, it’s so much more nuanced and impactful than that. It requires a blend of foresight, communication skills, and problem-solving abilities that often go unnoticed. One of the biggest challenges I’ve found is managing a constantly shifting schedule while keeping all stakeholders aligned. A good EA is always looking several steps ahead to anticipate potential conflicts or bottlenecks—whether it's scheduling a meeting without double-booking or ensuring vital documents are prepared beforehand. This proactive approach often means fixing problems before they even surface to others, which creates a smoother workflow for everyone involved. Another rewarding aspect is the trust that builds between the EA and executives. Being entrusted with confidential details and acting as an extension of their workflow gives a sense of ownership and responsibility that can be deeply fulfilling. I’ve found that this trust also empowers me to take initiative and find creative ways to streamline tasks, making busy days look effortless even when they are hectic behind the scenes. An often overlooked part of the role is the emotional intelligence needed to navigate office dynamics quietly and diplomatically. Balancing the demands of different departments and managing information flow delicately helps maintain a positive workplace atmosphere. What truly excites me about being an EA is playing a critical role in enabling leaders to make impactful decisions without getting bogged down by administrative chaos. It’s a behind-the-scenes career choice that requires dedication, adaptability, and a love for multitasking—and for those who thrive in such environments, it can be one of the most fulfilling professional paths.

I love working afternoons. I am so not a morning person so when I get to go to work after 4pm I honestly love it. I don’t have to wake up too early and I have time to be productive throughout my day 😊 #lemon8challenge #dayinmylife #whatieatinaday
