Homestead Gatekeeping
No more homestead gatekeeping ✌️❤️🤪#homestead #garden #gardening #nature #orchard
Oh, the 'greenhorn grove wife' label! I know it well. There are days I look out at my garden, still half-asleep in my PJs, pulling on rainboots just to get to my fruit trees before the sun gets too high. And yes, sometimes, a little voice whispers, 'Are you really a homesteader?' This journey isn't always picture-perfect, and that's okay. In fact, it's more than okay – it's real. For too long, the idea of 'homesteading' has been shrouded in a kind of mystique, making it feel out of reach for many. But what if we stripped away the gatekeeping and embraced a truly simple homestead definition? To me, it's about cultivating a life connected to the earth, fostering self-reliance, and finding joy in the small acts of creation. Whether you have acres of land or a small balcony garden, if you're striving to grow your own food, reduce your footprint, or simply nurture your connection to nature, you're on the homesteading path. It's not about how much you produce or how 'perfect' your setup is; it's about the intention and the effort. So, how do we navigate this path without getting bogged down by unrealistic expectations or the judgment of others? Here are a few things I've learned along the way: Start Small, Dream Big: You don't need to quit your job and buy a farm tomorrow. Begin with a few raised garden beds, a small herb patch, or even just learning to preserve seasonal fruits. My first 'orchard' was just a couple of young fruit trees that I doted on, often in my PJs! Every step, no matter how tiny, builds momentum. Embrace Imperfection (and Your PJs!): There will be failures – plants that don't thrive, projects that don't go as planned. It's part of the learning curve. Don't let the curated images on social media make you feel inadequate. My most authentic moments often involve dirt under my fingernails and those trusty rainboots. It's a Mindset, Not Just a Location: Homesteading is as much about a philosophy of living as it is about a physical place. It's about intentional choices, resourcefulness, and a desire to live more sustainably. You can foster a homesteading spirit anywhere. Connect, Don't Compete: The best part of this journey is the community. Find like-minded individuals, share your struggles and triumphs, and celebrate each other's progress. True homesteaders uplift, they don't gatekeep. So, to all the 'greenhorn grove wives' out there, and anyone questioning their place in the homesteading world: you are enough. Your efforts, your intentions, and your unique journey contribute to a richer, more vibrant world. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Pull on those rainboots, PJs and all, water those fruit trees, and know that you are exactly where you need to be. Checkmate to the gatekeepers!
