Gotta love yourself

... Read moreIt’s so true what they say: you really do need to love yourself before you can truly love someone else. I used to think it was selfish to put myself first, but I’ve learned that it’s actually the most selfless thing you can do. When I didn't truly value myself, I constantly sought validation from others, and my relationships often felt unbalanced. It was like I was looking for someone else to fill a void that only I could fill. This realization was a huge turning point for me. My journey to self-love wasn't a straight path. It involved a lot of introspection and actively changing my habits. For me, self-love isn’t just about pampering yourself (though a spa day never hurts!). It’s about setting healthy boundaries, learning to say 'no' without guilt, and forgiving myself for past mistakes. It's about nurturing my inner critic and turning her into my biggest cheerleader. I started practicing daily affirmations, reminding myself of my strengths and worth. Journaling also became a powerful tool to process my emotions and understand my needs better. One crucial aspect I discovered is finding a balance in life – not just between work and play, but also between giving to others and giving to myself. I realized I was constantly pouring from an empty cup. Now, I make sure to prioritize small acts of self-care every day, whether it’s enjoying a quiet cup of coffee, taking a walk in nature, or simply acknowledging my achievements, big or small. This 'Bal' of self-care keeps me grounded and ensures I have enough energy and love to share authentically with others. It's about recognizing that my well-being is not a luxury, but a necessity. It's also about embracing vulnerability. When you truly love yourself, you’re not afraid to show your authentic self, flaws and all. This allows for deeper, more meaningful connections because you’re not hiding or pretending to be someone you’re not. I’ve found that when I started loving my imperfections, others found it easier to love them too. This radical acceptance frees you from the constant pressure of seeking external approval. Overcoming self-doubt is another big part of this journey. There will be days when you feel like you’re not enough, but that’s when your self-love muscles need to kick in. Remind yourself of your progress, your resilience, and your inherent worth. No one else can define your value; that power lies entirely within you. So, if you’re on your own self-love journey, remember it’s a marathon, not a sprint. Be patient with yourself, celebrate every small victory, and know that every step you take towards valuing yourself is a step towards richer, more fulfilling relationships and a happier life overall. It truly empowers you to be the best version of yourself, not just for others, but most importantly, for YOU.
