where to find news now
i’m a freelance journalist based in the southern appalachian region. if you (like most gen z) get your news from tiktok and refuse to move to meta-owned apps, there are more options for you aside from just mainstream news orgs.
1. search for and follow independent journalists that you trust! newsletters are how a lot of independent journalists make a living, and you would be supporting individuals instead of corporations. look for substacks, wordpress sites, and newsletters hosted on beehiiv. two of my personal favorites are erin in the morning on substack and taylor lorenz’s user mag.
2. look for independent start-ups and reader-supported publications. dame magazine, scalawag, 404 media, flytrap media, propublica, the tennessee lookout, etc. are great starting points!
3. don’t underestimate the importance of satire publications, memes, or internet culture reporters. satire publications like the onion can be a great way to improve your media literacy and understanding of the news in a unique (and humorous) way. also, internet culture reporters are often underestimated because some fail to see the value in trends — i hope we all know by now that trends can indicate cultural and political shifts and at the very least they are interesting to follow!
