My pup's little bat-like morning back scratch always makes me laugh, and it got me thinking about all the other silly and adorable quirks our furry friends have! It's totally normal for dogs to scratch. Just like us, they get an itch! A good scratch can be part of their daily grooming, a way to stretch out those muscles after a long night's sleep, or simply how they relieve a minor irritation. When my pittie does her 'bat scratch,' she's usually just stretching out, maybe getting rid of some loose fur, and sometimes it looks like she's doing a full-body yoga pose! It’s all part of their natural behavior, and observing these little habits really helps us understand their personalities better. However, it's also good to know the difference between a normal, occasional scratch and something that might need a closer look. If your dog is scratching excessively, or if you notice any redness, flaking skin, hair loss, or scabs, it might be more than just a silly habit. Common culprits for excessive scratching can include allergies (food or environmental), fleas, dry skin, or even skin infections. If you're ever worried, a quick trip to the vet can help pinpoint the cause and get your pup feeling comfortable again. But for the most part, a few good scratches, especially after waking up, are just part of being a happy, healthy dog! Beyond scratching, dogs have so many other unique morning rituals! Does your dog do the 'morning zoomies' where they race around the house like a furry rocket? Or maybe they have a specific toy they have to greet as soon as they wake up? My pup also loves to do a big, dramatic yawn that sounds like a groan, followed by a full-body shake, before she's ready for her breakfast.
