Stormie

SAYS NO WORK TODAY.

I thought I was ready for anything, but nothing quite prepares you for a fluffy dictator like Stormie deciding your laptop keyboard is her new favorite napping spot. Just yesterday, she planted herself right on my keyboard, a paw strategically placed on the keys and her whole body blocking my screen. It was her way of saying, loud and clear, 'SAYS NO WORK TODAY.' Honestly, how can you argue with a face that cute? It got me thinking, why do our feline friends insist on turning our workstations into their personal petting zones? I've done a bit of digging and shared experiences with other cat parents, and it turns out there are a few common reasons. Firstly, that laptop is a cozy heat source! Cats are natural heat-seekers, and your warm keyboard or the fan exhaust is like a five-star spa treatment for them. Secondly, it's all about attention. When a cat sits on your laptop, they know they've got your undivided focus, even if it's just to try and gently move them. They see you staring at the screen, tapping away, and they want a piece of that action! It's their way of reminding you who the real boss is in the house. My Stormie, being the fluffy black cat that she is, has perfected the art of the 'laptop takeover.' She doesn't just sit; she engulfs the keyboard, making typing utterly impossible. I've had countless times where I've found random letters typed into documents or windows miraculously closing because her tail swished across the trackpad. It’s hilarious, frustrating, and endearing all at once. Sometimes, I even find her batting at the cursor as it moves across the screen – pure entertainment for her, and a complete work stoppage for me! So, what's a dedicated cat parent to do when their feline overlord decides work is optional? I've tried a few things. One trick that sometimes works is having a designated 'cat bed' or cozy spot right next to my workspace. Sometimes, just having a warm blanket or a sunbeam spot nearby can distract Stormie enough to leave my keyboard alone. Another strategy is to engage them with a quick play session before I settle down to work. A few minutes with a feather wand or laser pointer can sometimes tire them out enough for a peaceful hour or two of work. If all else fails, I've seen some people use a 'decoy' laptop or keyboard – an old, unplugged one that the cat can sit on instead. I haven't tried that one yet, but it's on my list! Ultimately, I’ve learned that sometimes, you just have to embrace the interruption. These moments of playful cat-induced chaos are part of the charm of having a furry companion. They remind us to take breaks, to enjoy the simple pleasures, and that our pets truly are part of our family – sometimes even our co-workers, whether we like it or not! So, next time your cat decides your laptop is their throne, take a deep breath, snap a cute photo like I did of Stormie, and maybe just enjoy the unexpected 'no work today' moment.
