weaving diary: crochet thread mesh top 🪡

this project has been coming along slowly, but only because i’d made it wayyyyy too big the first time & i had to frog it. i saw a few versions of this top online this past summer. V-stitch mesh is one of the best types of mesh stitches, in my opinion, because it has all the benefits of the mesh look but with a bit more coverage overall.

for this particular project, i started by measuring my waist & chaining an even number plus 1. then i worked up double crochet v-stitches for ~50 rows, measuring from the top of the bust down to the lower abdomen. the straps were super easy to attach too, but i didn’t want them to be too wide because i knew i was going to add a shell stitch border. for the shell border i did 6 double crochet with one single crochet on each end. i still need to steam this top so it fits correctly, but i’m actually really pleased with how this turned out! 🥰

... Read moreCrocheting a mesh top using thread offers a unique balance between style and breathability, especially during warmer months. The V-stitch mesh, celebrated for its openwork design paired with subtle coverage, is ideal for creating comfortable yet fashionable garments. One important aspect to consider when starting such a project is precise measuring. As the author mentions, measuring the waist and chaining an even number plus one helps ensure the initial foundation aligns well with your body size. Creating approximately 50 rows of double crochet V-stitches tailored from the top of the bust to the lower abdomen provides enough length to cover the torso comfortably while maintaining the airy mesh look. Adding straps that are narrow enough to complement the shell stitch border not only enhances the top's aesthetics but also maintains structural balance. The shell stitch border, consisting of six double crochets flanked by single crochets, adds a neat and decorative edge that frames the mesh beautifully. An additional tip for finishing is gently steaming the finished garment. This step helps the stitches relax and even out, improving the drape and fit of the mesh top. Using fine crochet thread also elevates the garment’s delicate and handmade feel, perfect for summer layering or beachwear. For those new to filigree crochet projects, experimenting with the V-stitch mesh can be rewarding but might require patience and occasional adjustment, such as frogging and restarting, to achieve the ideal size and shape. Engaging in communities like #createwithme and #fiberart can provide inspiration and support as you work through your crochet projects. Combining these techniques not only enhances your skills but results in personalized, handcrafted tops that stand out in handmade fashion.
