my handmade jewelry collection 🫶
this is just a small look into my collection because i’ve accumulated quite a bit of handmade jewelry over the years. though it can be a bit tedious, i enjoy the creative freedom that comes with the ability to make/customize jewelry. i’ve had numerous ideas for different styles of jewelry over the years, but i’ve just recently developed the skills required to do basic customizations.
i’d seen a few different versions of button jewelry online & when i came across a jar of buttons at the thrift store, i knew it was my chance to make some funky jewelry! i still have a bunch of buttons leftover so i’m going to find another way to upcycle them.
Handmade jewelry offers a wonderful outlet for creativity and personalization, allowing enthusiasts to express their individual style with unique pieces that you won’t find anywhere else. One exciting trend in this space is the use of upcycled materials, such as buttons, which add a nostalgic and eco-friendly dimension to jewelry making. Buttons can vary in color, shape, and texture, making them fantastic elements for crafting funky necklaces, earrings, and bracelets that stand out. Upcycling buttons not only reduces waste but also gives new life to vintage and thrifted finds. When working with buttons, consider combining them with other repurposed items like fabric scraps, beads, or wire to create layered designs with interesting textures. Basic jewelry-making skills, such as wire wrapping, stringing, and attaching findings, open the door to endless possibilities for customization. For beginners, starting with simple projects like button pendants or chunky statement rings can build confidence and skill. Thrift stores and flea markets are treasure troves for affordable button collections, ranging from classic mother-of-pearl buttons to brightly colored plastic varieties. Additionally, keeping a variety of buttons on hand encourages experimentation and spontaneous design ideas. One helpful tip is to organize your button collection by size, color, or theme to easily envision combinations before crafting. Furthermore, using eco-friendly glues and sustainable packaging promotes a responsible approach to handmade creations. Sharing your work and process on social platforms helps connect with fellow crafters and inspires others to explore handmade jewelry and upcycling as fulfilling hobbies. Overall, embracing handmade jewelry with unique materials like buttons showcases creativity, sustainability, and personal style. Whether you are just learning or enhancing your skills, there’s always an exciting new design waiting to be crafted from these small, charming treasures.
