Snake plant roots🌿

2024/7/7 Edited to

... Read moreHey fellow plant lovers! After seeing how much you all loved my initial post about my snake plant roots, I wanted to dive a little deeper and share some of my personal insights. It really is so satisfying to see those strong, healthy roots, isn't it? But beyond just looking good, understanding your Sansevieria's root system is key to keeping your plant thriving. First off, let's talk about what healthy snake plant roots should look like. In my experience, and as you can see in my photos with those vibrant orange-brown roots, healthy ones are usually firm, plump, and can range from almost white to a lovely orangey-brown or even a reddish tint, depending on the plant and soil minerals. They should never be dark, black, or mushy – that's a big red flag for rot! When I'm checking on a new snake plant cutting or repotting an older one, I always gently feel the roots. They should have a bit of resistance, not crumble or feel slimy. Now, what if you've got a beautiful snake plant leaf or cutting, but it just doesn't seem to be growing any roots? Don't panic! I’ve been there, and I’ve learned a few tricks on how to save a snake plant with no roots. My favorite method is water propagation. I simply place the bottom of the cutting in a jar of clean water, making sure only the very bottom inch or two is submerged. The key here is patience! It can take weeks, sometimes even months, for those little root nubs to appear. I keep the water fresh by changing it every few days to prevent bacteria build-up. I've found that a bright, indirect light spot helps encourage growth too. Once the roots are about 1-2 inches long and have formed a decent network, that's when I know it's ready to transition to well-draining soil. Another way, if you prefer, is to propagate directly in soil. For this, I let my snake plant cutting callus over for a few days after making the cut – this helps prevent rot. Then, I plant it in a small pot with a gritty, well-draining succulent mix. The trick here is to water very sparingly until you feel some resistance when you gently tug on the cutting, indicating new roots have formed. Overwatering a rootless cutting in soil is a quick way to invite rot! Understanding sansevieria roots also means knowing what to avoid. Overwatering is the number one killer for these tough plants. Their roots are actually quite shallow and aren't designed to sit in soggy soil. Always use a pot with drainage holes, and wait until the soil is completely dry before watering again. If you notice any black, soft, or foul-smelling roots during repotting, those are signs of root rot. You can often save the plant by carefully trimming away the rotten parts with sterilized scissors, letting the cuts callus, and then repotting in fresh, dry soil. So, whether you're admiring your thriving snake plant roots or trying to coax life into a new cutting, remember these tips. It’s all part of the rewarding journey of being a plant parent! Happy growing!

I left my snake plant outside and the cold weather killed it. 🥺 The roots look like the roots in your picture. Do you have any suggestions on what to do?

here’s how to repot your snake plant: first, grab some cactus soil & perlite. you may want to do this outside as it may get messy! make sure the new pot you’re repotting into has a drainage hole (snake plants need that) put some cactus soil in the bottom of the new pot as well as some perlit

I accidentally let my snake plant get so dry that the soil turned hydrophobic 😭 That means water wouldn’t soak in at all — it just ran straight through the pot. If this is happening to your plants, you either need to bottom water for a long soak or repot with fresh soil. Lesson learned… negle
