... Read moreBeing a domestic violence survivor is a journey, not a destination. When I first started calling myself a survivor, it felt like a heavy cloak, but over time, it transformed into a badge of courage. This October, as we observe Domestic Violence Awareness Month, it feels even more important to share what survivorship truly means beyond just the label. For me, being a survivor means reclaiming my voice and my story. It means acknowledging the pain and trauma I endured, but also recognizing the incredible strength it took to break free and rebuild. It's about learning to trust myself again, to set boundaries, and to understand that I deserve love and respect. It's not always easy; some days, the shadows of the past can feel overwhelming. But every day, I choose to step into the light. If you're reading this and thinking, 'I am a domestic violence survivor too,' please know you are not alone. So many of us carry similar experiences, and finding a community that understands can be incredibly healing. Here are a few things that have helped me on my journey: Seek Professional Help: Therapy, especially trauma-informed therapy, was a game-changer. It helped me process emotions, understand patterns, and develop coping mechanisms. Build a Support System: Reach out to trusted friends, family, or support groups. Having people who believe you and stand by you makes all the difference. Practice Self-Care: This looks different for everyone, but for me, it's about setting aside time for activities that bring me peace and joy – whether it's reading, spending time in nature, or creative expression. It's about nurturing the person I am becoming. Educate Yourself: Understanding the dynamics of abuse helped me realize it wasn't my fault. Knowledge is power in preventing future harm. Embrace Your Story: While it's deeply personal, sharing parts of my story, when I feel ready, has been incredibly empowering. It helps others and reinforces my own healing. Like a butterfly emerging from its chrysalis, our experiences shape us, but they don't define our future. Remember, healing isn't linear. There will be good days and challenging days. But with every step, you are moving forward, growing stronger, and building a life filled with purpose and peace. This awareness month, let's stand together, support each other, and shine a light on the path to healing.
