2025 Fallout of the Steampunk Fair
Last month, I got to participate in the local Steampunk fair again!
This year’s theme was a mashup of Fallout and Steampunk. I leaned into it with my character (Aín Ironquill) who was always a steampunk robot and exposed more of the gears.
I had a lovely neighbor, a psychic. Day one, she helped me fix my corset (I managed to pull a string out of its grommet) and day 2, I helped her with her tent. She was a very sweet human and I enjoyed being her neighbor.
The lady in the Riddler cosplay is a regular at these events and I’m grateful she always asks to take pictures, because I never do!
The Mid Maine Chamber of Commerce is a lovely group of people who truly love their community and help out with these events.
Steampunk and Fallout – what an unexpected, yet utterly brilliant, mashup for a fair! I've always been fascinated by how these two distinct worlds can collide, especially when people ask, "Is Fallout considered steampunk?" While pure Fallout leans more into retro-futurism with a nuclear twist, the shared love for intricate, mechanical aesthetics and a certain gritty DIY spirit makes them a perfect pairing. Imagine the detailed mechanisms of steampunk combined with the resilience and resourcefulness of the wasteland. It truly opens up a whole new realm for creativity in costume design, blending Victorian elegance with post-apocalyptic survival. When I was preparing my steampunk robot character, Aín Ironquill, for this year's event, I really leaned into that "blown up robot/synth look." It wasn't just about adding gears; it was about imagining what Aín would look like after surviving the wastes, her internal workings more exposed, her design more rugged. My costume featured half-face painted black, adorned with visible gears, and a cool steampunk goggle that added to the mechanical vibe. I paired this with a brown hat, a white ruffled shirt, and a plaid vest, which are classic steampunk elements, but then added a gold skirt for a touch of unexpected flair, making her look both elegant and battle-ready. This approach is fantastic for anyone looking into steampunk fashion trends for 2025 and 2026 – it's all about personalizing the look, mixing traditional with modern or thematic elements, and truly making it your own. Attending these fairs is always an adventure, and it’s not just about the costumes. It’s about the community and the unique experiences. I had my vendor booth, "EXPLORING WHAT IF WITH BOOKS," set up under a vibrant purple tent, which became a little oasis. One of my favorite interactions was with a psychic neighbor who gave me a reading with her tarot cards – it added such a mystical and memorable layer to the event! And you know, I'm always so focused on my character that I rarely take photos, so I was thrilled when a lady in an amazing Riddler cosplay asked to snap a selfie with me. It’s those spontaneous moments and connections that make these events truly special. Whether you're showcasing elaborate fashion, delving into character, or just soaking in the atmosphere, a Fallout Steampunk Fair offers a rich tapestry of experiences that inspire and delight.
