Book Review: Murder Your Employer
Finished this one and man did it take me for a ride! I listened to the audiobook version on #spotify and give it a solid #fivestars across the board in terms of performance and story. I think this is set in a period between 1930-50 ish? (Don’t quote me) And it has a wonderful view in that time period as well as the psychology in 3 different students as they learn and commit to completing their graduating thesis. Or die trying. #booktok #bookreview
Okay, so let me tell you more about why 'Murder Your Employer' absolutely earned its five-star rating from me! This isn't just any book; it's a truly original and multilayered experience. From the very first chapter, I was hooked by the premise: a secret academy where students learn the art of assassination, with their graduation hinging on successfully completing a "thesis" – an actual murder. It sounds dark, but it's handled with such clever plotting and a surprisingly witty tone that it felt more like a delightfully dark comedy crime caper. What really stood out was how well-structured the narrative is. The author masterfully weaves together the stories of three distinct students, each with their own motivations and challenges. It was fascinating to see them change and grow (or try to) under pressure, facing moral dilemmas and unexpected twists. The psychology behind their decisions and their interactions with the eccentric faculty kept me constantly guessing. You're not just reading a plot; you're delving into the minds of complex characters, which makes the journey so much richer. The setting, which I approximated as 1930s-50s, contributes immensely to the atmospheric quality of the book. The vivid descriptions transported me straight into this clandestine academy and the period it evokes. I could almost hear the rustle of old books and the hushed whispers in dimly lit corridors. It has that classic detective novel feel in its setup, even though the protagonists are the ones planning the 'crimes.' It's like a twisted 'cozy mystery' where you're rooting for the... well, you'll have to read it to find out! For those who love a good mystery with a unique twist, or perhaps enjoy authors who blend dark humor with intricate plots, this is definitely one to pick up. And if you're an audiobook fan like me, the performance was fantastic, adding another layer of enjoyment to the beautifully-written prose. I kept thinking throughout my listen how cinematic it felt – I can totally see this being adapted into a fantastic mini-series or even a movie. It has all the elements: intrigue, character development, and a premise that begs for visual interpretation. Seriously, if you're looking for a book that will keep you entertained and thinking long after you've finished, give 'Murder Your Employer' a shot!
