Brick painting 🫶

It all started with wanting to bring my favorite book covers to life in a tangible, quirky way, and now I'm hooked on all sorts of creative brick art. It’s truly one of the most satisfying crafts with bricks you can try, and the possibilities for painted brick ideas are endless! First things first, choosing your brick. You can use old reclaimed bricks, new paving bricks, or even smaller decorative ones. Just make sure they're clean and dry. I usually give mine a quick scrub with soap and water, then let them air dry completely. For paints, acrylic craft paints work wonderfully, especially if you're aiming for vibrant colors. If your brick art is going to live outdoors, investing in exterior-grade acrylics or adding a good quality sealant is a must. Speaking of sealants, that’s where a good gloss finish comes in handy! A clear acrylic spray sealant with a glossy sheen not only protects your artwork from the elements but also gives it a beautiful, polished look. Now for the fun part: the ideas! Beyond painting beloved book covers – which is still my absolute favorite, turning a simple brick into a miniature literary masterpiece – there are so many other ways to get creative. For your garden, why not paint them as charming plant markers? Imagine a brick with a cute herb name like 'Basil' or 'Rosemary' neatly painted on it. These make super practical and adorable additions to any garden bed. You can also create personalized welcome signs for your porch or use heavier bricks as unique doorstops. For more intricate designs, think abstract patterns, mandalas, or even faux mosaic styles using small painted squares. Kids love this too – they can paint simple shapes, animals, or their names, making it a fantastic craft project for all ages. And don't forget seasonal decor! A brick painted like a spooky ghost for Halloween or a festive present for Christmas can add a whimsical touch to your holiday decorations. Here are a few tips I've picked up along the way: Prime it: For best results, especially on porous bricks, a coat of white gesso or primer will help your colors pop and adhere better. Layer wisely: Build up your colors in thin layers. It prevents cracking and gives you more control. Seal it: As mentioned, a good sealant is crucial, especially for outdoor projects. A glossy sealant will also deepen your colors. Stencils & Transfers: Don't feel like you have to freehand everything! Stencils are your best friend for lettering or precise designs. You can also print out designs and use transfer paper. Once your brick art is dry and sealed, the only limit is your imagination for where to display it! They look fantastic nestled among plants in the garden, lined up on a bookshelf (especially the book-themed ones!), or adding a pop of color to a patio.
