Teacher Boundaries
The pressure for educators to turn their learning environments into aesthetic content studios is at an all-time high. But as my hour-long morning commute officially resumes this week, I am making a firm commitment to keeping my content creation completely off-campus. Leaving the constant hustle behind means fiercely protecting my students' privacy, respecting FERPA regulations, and honoring my contract hours. When I am in that building, 100% of my energy belongs to creating a calm, regulated environment for my Pre-K students. The aesthetic room setups and mid-day vlogs might be trendy, but my priority is undivided presence. All of my strategies, tips, and reflections will continue to be filmed right here at home. Drop a 🏠 in the comments if you are also committed to keeping your classroom a sacred space for learning, not just for content!

Balancing teaching responsibilities with content creation is a growing challenge for educators today, especially those wanting to share their work as 'teacher creators'. From personal experience, establishing boundaries has been a game changer in preserving both my energy and my students’ privacy. First and foremost, I found it vital to detach content creation from my actual classroom environment. This separation not only honors FERPA regulations by ensuring no identifiable student information or footage is shared but also allows me to be fully present with my students during school hours. Using my home as the primary filming space helps maintain professionalism and focus on student learning when at school. Moreover, protecting privacy extends beyond laws—it respects the trust families place in us. Avoiding classroom filming means I don’t inadvertently expose children’s faces, behaviors, or developmental moments online, which can be sensitive and personal. Another critical aspect is managing time. Earlier, I tried capturing mid-day vlogs and setting up picture-perfect classrooms, which became exhausting and took away from my teaching energy. Now, I am stricter about contract hours, allotting dedicated time at home for content creation without encroaching on planning or teaching time. Creating a calm Pre-K classroom environment is enhanced when the teacher’s attention isn’t split or distracted by social media pressures. This stability benefits everyone—students feel safer, and I can implement strategies to support regulation and engagement effectively. Finally, community support is invaluable. Engaging with fellow educators who also value their classroom boundaries encourages accountability and shared strategies for avoiding burnout. If you are committed to preserving your classroom as a sacred space while sharing your journey, consider setting firm limits on where and when you create content. Prioritize your students’ privacy and your wellbeing—your teaching and your followers will appreciate the authenticity, calm, and respect that come with these boundaries.
