Tips for growing mint

2023/6/21 Edited to

... Read moreHey fellow gardeners! After my initial post on mint, I got so many questions about specific care, especially for outdoor plants and how to really keep that vigorous growth in check. So, I wanted to dive deeper into some common questions I get and share even more of my personal experiences to help you grow the happiest mint possible! Let's talk about watering – it's crucial! I've found that outdoor mint generally prefers consistently moist soil, but definitely not soggy. The amount of water they need can vary quite a bit depending on whether they're in a pot or the ground, the weather, and your climate. In my experience, during hot summer days, I often check on my potted mint daily, and sometimes water every other day if the top inch of soil feels dry. For mint planted directly in the ground, once it's established, it might need less frequent watering, perhaps two or three times a week, especially if you get some rainfall. The best trick? Stick your finger an inch or two into the soil. If it feels dry, it's time to water! Wilting leaves can be a sign of thirst, but also sometimes too much water, so always check the soil moisture first before reaching for the watering can. I always make sure my pots have excellent drainage holes to prevent waterlogging and root rot. Many of you asked about growing mint from seed. While it's certainly possible, I've personally had much faster and more reliable success starting mint from cuttings or simply buying a small starter plant. Mint seeds can be a bit tricky to germinate and take longer to establish a robust plant. If you're keen to try from seed, sow them shallowly (they need light to germinate, so just barely cover them) in moist, well-draining soil indoors about 8-10 weeks before your last expected frost. Keep the soil consistently moist until they sprout. Once they're a few inches tall and all danger of frost has passed, you can transplant them outdoors. But honestly, if you see a friend with a thriving mint plant, a quick cutting placed in a glass of water on a sunny windowsill will often root in no time, giving you a head start! Beyond just watering, outdoor mint thrives with a few other considerations. For sunlight, I aim for at least 4-6 hours of direct sun for my mint. It can tolerate some partial shade, especially in hotter climates where intense afternoon sun might scorch the leaves, but too much shade can make the plant leggy and less flavorful. Soil is key; well-draining soil is a must to prevent soggy roots. I usually amend my garden beds with some good quality compost before planting to ensure both drainage and a slow release of nutrients. Feeding mint isn't usually necessary if your soil is good, as it's not a heavy feeder. I might give mine a light feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer once or twice during the growing season, especially if it's in a pot and nutrients might leach out faster. Too much fertilizer can actually reduce the intensity of its aromatic oils and flavor. Pruning is essential not just for harvesting, but also to encourage bushier growth and prevent flowering, which can make the leaves less flavorful. I pinch back stems regularly throughout the season, cutting just above a leaf node. The original post briefly mentioned containment, and this is probably the most asked-about topic! Mint is notorious for its vigorous runners that can quickly take over a garden bed. My go-to method for keeping it in check is always planting it in a pot. Even if I'm putting it in a garden bed, I'll plant it in a pot, then sink that pot into the ground. Make sure the pot has drainage holes and that the rim of the pot is slightly above the soil level to prevent runners from escaping over the edge. You can also use root barriers, but pots are generally more effective and easier for home gardeners to manage. Regular checking and snipping any rogue runners that try to escape is also part of my routine. And for those specifically asking about Mexican mint, or *Plectranthus amboinicus*, it's a bit different from your typical Mentha varieties like peppermint or spearmint. I've found Mexican mint prefers a bit more warmth and can be more sensitive to cold. If you're in a cooler climate, you might treat it more like an annual or bring it indoors for winter. It still likes well-drained soil and moderate watering, but I've noticed it can tolerate slightly drier conditions between waterings compared to common mints. It loves full sun but can appreciate a little afternoon shade in really intense heat. The essential care principles are similar – good drainage, adequate sun, and mindful watering – but always keep its tropical origins in mind! I hope these extra tips help you grow beautiful, healthy, and contained mint in your garden! Happy gardening!
