😮‍💨 racism? in my ishgard?

Read moreIt's a topic many of us might not want to confront in our favorite games, but the reality is that racism and entrenched stereotypes can sometimes surface even within the vibrant world of Final Fantasy XIV. My initial post hinted at this, sparked by some truly disheartening experiences in Ishgard, a city known for its rich history but, sadly, not immune to prejudice. When we talk about race stereotypes in FFXIV, it often starts innocently enough. Each playable race – from the diminutive Lalafell to the stoic Elezen, the fiercely proud Roegadyn, the elegant Miqo'te and Au Ra, and the newer Hrothgar and Viera – comes with its own lore, cultural nuances, and even popular player-created perceptions. Sometimes these are harmless jokes, like Lalafell being 'potatoes' or Miqo'te being overly cutesy. However, these playful stereotypes can sometimes morph into something more exclusionary, influencing how players interact with each other based on their chosen race, or even their real-world background. I've personally witnessed how quickly a lighthearted banter can turn sour. There have been instances where players, perhaps feeling anonymous behind their screens, have hurled hurtful comments that go far beyond friendly teasing. The kind of remarks I've seen, like a harsh "shut up" or outright aggressive statements such as "GO BACK 2 YOU'RE OWN COUNTRY," are stark reminders that some people bring real-world prejudices into Eorzea. It's not just about in-game race; it can be about a player's perceived nationality, gender, or other characteristics. These moments are incredibly jarring. You log into FFXIV to escape, to enjoy a fantasy world, only to be confronted with the very real ugliness of discrimination. When you're just trying to enjoy a raid or a crafting session, and someone targets you with xenophobic language, it completely shatters the immersion and the sense of community. It makes you feel unwelcome, like you don't belong, echoing the sentiment of "U A" problem in the community. So, what can we do? My first step is always to report such behavior. Square Enix has clear rules against harassment, and utilizing the in-game reporting tools is crucial. Beyond that, it's about building a supportive community. Speaking up when you see it happen, offering support to those targeted, and fostering an environment where such comments are not tolerated helps. Let's remember that our actions, even in a game, have an impact. Let's strive to make Ishgard, and all of Eorzea, a truly welcoming place for everyone, free from the shadow of prejudice and harmful stereotypes.
