Idc about eye contact… do u?:
I feel my audhd the most when, in awe, I stare at a human who’s looking into another human’s eyes. It appears so effortless that it feels as if I’m watching someone speak a language fluently that I cannot.
I guess it’s not so much that I don’t care about eye contact as that my *brain* just doesn’t give an f about it. My neurons are untethered to societal norms and so my eyes just… go wherever they want.
I have to anxiously, and manually, keep my eyes where they need to be when I’m speaking. If I don’t pay attention, they’re looking at the ceiling or darting to the right and left without my permission. I have no idea why they’re so unpredictable, but it’s a daily battle keeping them in check.
It’s more that I don’t want to care about eye contact. I don’t want to have to tell my eyes where to be at all times. It’s a distraction when I also need to be listening very closely to what the person is saying. It feels like my auditory processing disorder should be tended to first, but what do I know.
I vividly remember attending a wedding where the groom gave a speech not about his future wife’s kind demeanor or beauty, but her ability to lock eyes with ease. This struck me because it implies that those who don’t do so are not doing so out of malice.
I don’t want to gaze into your eyes because it’s immensely uncomfortable for me. It physically hurts. The experience is akin to dialing my overstimulation to 1,000. But I’m broken if I don’t feel internal pain just to make you comfortable. I’m broken if you don’t consider that for many, eye contact is a skill that’s not built-in.
Except I’m not broken. I’m just different than you. And that’s ok.

It’s not that I don’t want to engage or connect—quite the opposite—but my brain processes sensory and social cues differently. Eye contact can provoke significant overstimulation. This overwhelming sensory input can lead to heightened anxiety or physical discomfort, making it difficult to concentrate on the conversation itself. Instead of focusing on the speaker’s words, my attention shifts to managing the discomfort caused by the intensity of the gaze. This is compounded by auditory processing difficulties that often accompany neurodivergence, which make it harder to filter and interpret spoken language while simultaneously trying to keep my eyes fixed. I've found that consciously managing where my eyes go—whether looking at the ceiling or elsewhere—is a daily effort rather than an instinctive action. For many neurodivergent people, eye contact doesn’t come naturally and is instead a learned skill that requires mental resources that might otherwise be used for listening and participating meaningfully. Understanding these difficulties can foster more empathy and acceptance. Rather than interpreting lack of eye contact as disinterest or rudeness, it can be seen as a neurological difference with legitimate sensory and processing explanations. Accepting that eye contact is not a universal ease for everyone allows for more authentic and inclusive social interactions. In social settings, finding alternative ways to communicate engagement—like nodding, verbal affirmations, or open body language—can signal attentiveness without the discomfort of forced eye contact. It’s important to recognize that being "different" in how we experience and express connection is valid and enriches the diversity of human interaction.
