If you're like me and obsessed with making technology work smarter, not harder, building a home assistant on a budget can be incredibly rewarding. Using an old phone as the core device running Home Assistant paired with Viee Assist and a Bluetooth speaker means you don’t need to spend a fortune on smart home gadgets. I found that this setup not only saves money but also gives me more control over customization and privacy compared to commercial products. One of the coolest features I integrated was accessing OBD2 data from my car remotely. This means before I even get in, I can check vital information like engine diagnostics and battery levels directly through Home Assistant. Combining Torque app data with Viee Assist made this possible seamlessly. This real-time data visibility improves my driving readiness and helps avoid unexpected car troubles. Setting this system up required some tinkering but plenty of online communities offer guides and scripts. The real joy was turning that old phone, which otherwise just sat in a drawer, into a functional part of my smart ecosystem. If you’re interested in smart tech without breaking the bank, this project is definitely worth exploring. It’s a reminder that innovation often comes from maximizing what we already have rather than buying the newest gadget on the market.
