Sis, you’re DEPRESSED

Is this a #safespace ? Let’s talk about it.

I was diagnosed with high functioning depression in early 2023 after having a panic attack at 2am and having to call my mom in a frenzy. I didn’t know what depression ACTUALLY looked like. I just knew I wasn’t sad. I really wish someone would have given me the information I’m about to give you, because it would have saved me a lot of trouble. But here’s to helping my fellow sisters! #girlsgirl

Functional depression, also known as high-functioning depression, can be challenging to identify because people with it often manage to carry on with their daily responsibilities.

Here are five signs that may indicate functional depression in women:

⚫️ Persistent Low Mood

Even if they appear fine on the outside, women with functional depression often experience a consistent, underlying sadness or emotional numbness that doesn’t seem to go away.

⚫️ Chronic Fatigue and Low Energy

Despite getting adequate rest, they may feel tired all the time, struggling to find the energy for tasks and feeling physically and mentally drained.

⚫️ Loss of Interest or Motivation

Activities they once enjoyed may no longer bring pleasure. They may go through the motions of work, family, or social obligations without enthusiasm.

⚫️ Irritability and Mood Swings

Functional depression can lead to increased irritability, frustration, or mood swings that can seem disproportionate to the situation.

⚫️ Self-Criticism and Negative Self-Talk

Women with functional depression often engage in harsh self-criticism and have a persistent feeling of not being “good enough” or worry excessively about disappointing others.

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, talk to your doctor or therapist. There is help for those who seek it 💜

... Read moreFunctional depression is often overlooked because individuals maintain their daily routines while battling internal struggles. Recognizing the symptoms is vital for seeking help. Persistent low mood can manifest as an ongoing emotional numbness, which might not be visibly apparent to others. Chronic fatigue doesn't always correlate with lack of sleep; even after rest, feelings of tiredness can persist, affecting daily activities. Loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities is another hallmark. The enthusiasm that once accompanied hobbies or responsibilities may fade, making it hard to engage fully with life. This can lead to social withdrawal, impacting relationships. Additionally, irritability and mood swings might emerge as individuals find it difficult to cope with stressors, resulting in responses that seem disproportionate. Self-criticism is a common struggle for those dealing with functional depression. Individuals may find themselves caught in a cycle of negative self-talk, perpetuating feelings of inadequacy. Understanding these symptoms is crucial for identification and support. If you recognize these signs in yourself or someone close to you, it's important to reach out to a healthcare professional for guidance. Remember, acknowledging the condition is the first step towards healing.
