... Read moreSo, you saw my first DoorDash shift earnings, and yeah, $26.55 for a couple of hours with my friend driving felt pretty good! But let me tell you more about what that really means and what it was like, especially if you're thinking of trying it yourself. First off, diving into the earnings screen (you know, the one that showed my $26.55 total for September 8th!), it's important to understand the breakdown. I saw $17.05 was DoorDash pay and $9.50 came from tips. This really highlights the DoorDash pay model: you get a base pay from DoorDash for each delivery, and then tips are extra. Those tips can make a huge difference! For my 3 deliveries, that tip amount was fantastic. It’s also interesting to see the active time versus dash time. My active time was 1 hour 10 minutes, meaning the time I was actually on a delivery, while my dash time was 2 hours 26 minutes – the total time I was logged in and available for orders. This gap is normal and accounts for waiting for orders. Being a 'passenger princess' for DoorDash car delivery was a unique experience! It meant I could focus entirely on navigating with Google Maps navigation, checking order details, and making sure the DoorDash delivery bag was ready. If you're thinking of doing DoorDash in a car with a friend, make sure you communicate well! One person can handle the app and navigation, the other drives. It can actually make the process smoother, though it means splitting earnings or just having a designated driver. Make sure your delivery car is reliable and has enough gas! Dashing on a Sunday, like I did, can be pretty good! People are often ordering in, so there can be a decent number of orders. Different days and times will vary, but weekends generally see higher demand. For your first day doordashing, I'd suggest picking a time when you think it might be moderately busy, but not overwhelming, so you can get the hang of it. A few first day doordashing tips I picked up: Make sure your phone is charged, keep your insulated bag handy (like my DoorDash delivery bag!), and don't be afraid to use DoorDash Dasher Support Chat if something goes wrong. For example, if a customer gives the wrong address or a restaurant is taking forever, the chat support can be super helpful. Just know that it might take a few minutes to connect. Finally, for anyone considering DoorDashing for essential income or needing flexibility (especially if you're juggling responsibilities like caring for a child, though I wasn't doing that myself), it definitely offers flexibility since you set your own hours. However, relying solely on it can be challenging due to income fluctuations. It’s a great side hustle, but understanding the DoorDash pay model and managing your expectations, especially for the doordash dasher earnings screen, is key. My $26.55 on September 8th was a good start, but every day is different!
