I Looked at So Many Offices, But Maybe I’m Moving Too Fast

Yesterday, I stopped thinking about opening an office and went outside to meet people who had nothing to do with my business.

Later, I closed my eyes and thought about everyone I met while looking at offices.

Everyone seemed to be working hard to live.

Landlords who own several properties. Small food-stall owners rushing to serve customers. Local drivers who may look aggressive to outsiders.

It wasn’t the comfortable, polished, “elite” image I had imagined.

Maybe I haven’t understood Yiwu’s history and culture yet. Maybe I simply haven’t really become part of the city.

So I’m starting to question my original plan.

Maybe I was moving too fast.

Do I really need to rent an office immediately?

Maybe I should slow down, observe more, talk to more people, and test some ideas before spending money.

Sometimes starting a business isn’t about moving forward as fast as possible.

Sometimes you need to stop and understand where you are first.

... Read moreWhen I first considered renting an office in Yiwu, I was eager to dive into my business. However, stepping away from that goal and spending time observing the city’s daily life helped me realize how much I underestimated the local atmosphere. Yiwu isn’t the polished, elite environment I imagined; it’s a bustling hub where landlords manage multiple properties, food-stall owners hustle to serve their customers, and local drivers navigate the streets with a spirited energy. Each person is striving hard just to make a living. This observation made me think: maybe the key to successful entrepreneurship here isn’t rushing to set up a formal office space but rather taking time to understand the city’s history, culture, and people. By slowing down, I began to see value in immersing myself in the community—talking to locals, challenging my assumptions, and letting my ideas evolve naturally before making big financial commitments. In my experience, starting a business is often portrayed as a race where speed is everything. Yet, sometimes, pausing and reflecting can lead to better decisions. For Yiwu, a city known for its global trade and foreign markets, understanding the human side—the hardworking vendors and property owners—can inform more sustainable business models. This approach resonates with many entrepreneurs who have found success by blending local knowledge with broader startup ambitions. If you’re considering launching or expanding your business in Yiwu or a similar environment, I suggest focusing less on immediate office space and more on building relationships and gathering insights. Testing your business ideas through conversations and observations, rather than quick investments, can save resources and increase your success in the long run. Sometimes, the smartest move is to slow your pace and truly become part of the community first.

5 lessons from my hardest year as a new mom in SG
I didn’t expect motherhood to undo me like this. I’m a zillennial mom — early 90s, right on that millennial–Gen Z line. We grew up on PSLE stress, survived NS or poly/JC, and were taught early on how to move fast. Fast to understand. Fast to adapt. Fast to not fall behind. I carried th

How Fast Should a Relationship Move?
In the world of dating and relationships, one of the most common questions people ask themselves is: “Are we moving too fast—or too slow?” The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Every relationship has its own rhythm, shaped by the people in it, their past experiences, and their hopes

I used to think moving fast meant I cared more. Turns out, slowing down is how you see clearly. Real attraction isn’t urgency — it’s choice. Have you ever rushed something you actually wanted to keep? #cmb #coffeemeetsbagel #DateRealWithCMB #datingadvice #men
