Fresh retwist Since october
What’s the longest you went without a retwist
It's a question every loc wearer has pondered: how long should you really go without a retwist? For me, this journey is a continuous learning curve, and honestly, there's no one-size-fits-all answer. I recently got a fresh retwist, and it reminded me of how crucial timing can be for loc health and appearance. My personal record for going without a retwist was a good four months once. It was an experiment, driven by curiosity and a bit of laziness, I confess! While my locs didn't unravel, the new growth became quite a challenge to manage, and they started to matt together at the roots. It definitely made the next retwist session longer and a bit more tender. Typically, I aim for anywhere between 6 to 8 weeks. This seems to be the sweet spot for my hair type, allowing enough new growth to be retwisted without causing excessive tension, but not so much that it becomes unruly. Several factors influence how long you can and should go between retwists. Your hair's growth rate is a big one. Some people have super fast growth and might need more frequent maintenance, while others can stretch it longer. Lifestyle also plays a role; if you're very active, sweat a lot, or frequently immerse your hair in water, you might notice your locs loosening or frizzing faster. The desired aesthetics matter too. Do you prefer a super neat, polished look, or do you embrace a more freeform, natural vibe? The neat look usually requires more frequent retwists. Going too long between retwists can lead to your locs tangling, especially at the roots, making separation more difficult and potentially causing breakage if not handled gently. On the other hand, retwisting too often is a common pitfall. I've heard stories and even experienced a bit of thinning myself when I was retwisting every 3-4 weeks in the beginning of my loc journey. Constant tension on the roots can weaken them over time, leading to breakage and traction alopecia. It's about finding that delicate balance. To extend the time between my fresh retwists, especially since I sometimes push it past October, I rely on a few tricks. Scalp care is paramount – regular oiling and gentle massages keep my scalp healthy. I also use protective styles like pineappling my locs at night or wearing bonnets to reduce friction. A good rosewater spray helps keep my locs hydrated and reduces frizz. And sometimes, before a long-overdue retwist, I'll do a gentle detox. I've found that a mixture, often incorporating pure baking soda, helps clarify my scalp and locs, removing buildup and preparing them for a fresh start without harsh chemicals. Listening to your locs and understanding what they need is key. Every loc journey is unique, so pay attention to your hair's signals!
