It also got me thinking about these fascinating creatures beyond their natural habitat – specifically, about the growing interest in keeping them as pets, especially in places like India. If you’re captivated by their striking appearance and considering bringing one into your home, there’s a lot to know before you make that leap. One of the most common questions I've seen people ask is about the 'iguana pet price in India.' From what I've gathered, the cost of a green iguana itself can vary significantly. You might find younger, smaller iguanas starting from around ₹2,000 to ₹5,000 (Indian Rupees), but this can go much higher, sometimes even ₹10,000 or more, depending on factors like their age, size, specific coloration (some morphs are rarer), and whether you're buying from a reputable breeder or a pet store. It's crucial to seek out ethical sources to ensure you're getting a healthy animal. However, the initial purchase price is just the tip of the iceberg. The real investment comes with setting up their habitat. Green iguanas grow quite large, often reaching 5-6 feet in length, including their tail, so they need a substantial enclosure. A proper vivarium can easily cost upwards of ₹15,000 to ₹30,000, and often more as they grow and require upgrades. This enclosure needs specific lighting: UVB bulbs are essential for their bone health and to prevent metabolic bone disease, and basking lamps to maintain a warm temperature gradient. These specialized bulbs need regular replacement, adding to the ongoing costs. Beyond the habitat, you'll have daily expenses for their diet. Green iguanas are herbivores, requiring a varied diet of fresh leafy greens, vegetables, and some fruit, along with calcium and vitamin supplements. This fresh produce can add up over time. Regular veterinary check-ups with an exotic pet vet are also a must, and these specialized services can be pricier than standard pet care. So, while the idea of having a beautiful green iguana might be tempting, it's vital to understand that they are a long-term commitment, often living for 15-20 years with proper care. They require significant space, specific environmental conditions, a meticulous diet, and specialized veterinary attention. Before considering an iguana as a pet, especially if you're in India, I highly recommend thorough research into their care requirements and ensuring you can meet their needs for their entire lifespan. Observing them in their natural habitat, like I did in Cancun, is a wonderful experience, but owning one is a completely different journey!
