Driving in Jeju-do 🇰🇷🍊

Here’s everything you need to know before renting a car in Jeju!

1️⃣ Requirements to rent a car 🚗

- Minimum age: 21 (depends on car rental company)

- International Driving Permit (IDP)

You can apply for your IDP online (https://idponlinev2.aas.com.sg) or head down to Automobile Association of Singapore, which was what I did! Managed to get my IDP within less than 5 mins, if not around 7 days via online application.

2️⃣ Choose a good car rental company

Things to consider:

- Car Insurance (must get!)

- Price per day

- Shuttle bus services to and from airport

- English friendly

- I used Tamra Rent a Car as it was one of the cheapest rental companies

3️⃣ Roads

- Use Naver Maps (Google Maps don’t work in Korea)

- Speed limit ranges from 30km/h to 80km/h

- Take note of speed cameras 📸

- You can turn when the traffic light is red 🚥

- Drivers in Jeju like to horn at you lol but don’t panic

One important thing I learned from my driving experience there is to remember that while the driver sits on the left side, Jeju’s roads and traffic rules might differ from what you’re used to at home. For navigation, Naver Maps is indispensable since Google Maps often doesn’t provide reliable directions in Korea. I found downloading the Naver Maps app and saving offline maps before arrival very helpful, especially in areas with poor internet connection. Another tip is to always be mindful of varying speed limits, as Jeju’s roads can range from 30 km/h in residential areas to 80 km/h on highways. Speed cameras are also common, so keeping within limits avoids fines. I also noticed locals tend to use their car horns more frequently—which might initially seem aggressive—but it’s usually just a driving habit to signal or alert, so no need to feel anxious. Regarding car rental, getting comprehensive car insurance is crucial for peace of mind. Rental companies like Tamra Rent a Car offer competitive rates and shuttle services from the airport, which I personally found convenient. Don’t forget to bring your International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your valid driver’s license; applying for the IDP is quick if you visit a local automobile association beforehand. Renting a car opens up opportunities to visit stunning spots off the beaten path, such as Seongsan Ilchulbong and Hallasan National Park, making for an unforgettable adventure. Lastly, parking in Jeju can sometimes be tricky, so plan your stops ahead and park considerately to respect local traffic flow. Overall, driving in Jeju-do was an enjoyable and enriching experience that gave me freedom and flexibility—key to fully embracing the island’s charm.

If you’re visiting Jeju in the later part of the year, tangerine picking is a MUST! There are plenty of farms across the island and some even come with a cafe. You can searched “제주 체험농장” on Naver and find tangerine farms that are open for such opportunity easily. I only chose this farm because
