Nihi Sumba | The Hotel That Changed The Whole Island
Nihi Sumba is located on the west side of Sumba Island, Indonesia.
From Bali, it takes a plane first, and then a car for about an hour and a half to reach the hotel. Although the island of Zumba is about three times larger than Bali, there are almost no large cities on the island. Most of them are small villages, and people still live a very simple lifestyle.
On the way, the children of Sumba are seen on the roadside. When they see the hotel car passing by, they smile, wave, and greet amicably. It's a warm sight from the moment they arrive.
There are only about 27 villas here, but each is located in a different zone, widely spaced, keeping the whole resort quiet, calm and very personal.
There are about 400 employees, most of whom are local to Sumba Island itself.
Our room is the Mandaka Surf Villa, which overlooks the famous surf spot of Occy's Left. From the room, you can see the waves coming to shore all day long, and you can watch professional surfers play the same waves repeatedly, like a boring nature show.
Every Wednesday night, the hotel hosts a Foundation Dinner with children from the community performing singing and dancing, giving a sense of the Nihi Foundation's intention to continue to support education and community development. The children are so natural, bright and smiling that guests can feel that sincerity.
The foundation's concept is "Their land.A shared future." or "This is their land. The future is what we build together."
The foundation brings back a portion of the hotel's revenue from community development - education, schools, utilities and the quality of life of the island's people.
Although Nihi Sumba is a very high-priced hotel, when you see what's happening on the island, you understand that it's not just a luxury resort, it's a tourism model that really benefits the community.
For us, Nihi is a hotel that almost nobody can copy because it's not just a hotel business, it's like a dream project for people who want to grow this island with the locals.
