Be a better listener - do this!

With so many distractions around us, it can often feel like your partner isn’t really listening to you and your partner may feel the same way!

So, what can you do to work on this?

1. Put down your phone/tablet/computer -Reduces outside communication and distractions from the current conversation.

2. Make eye contact -Looking at someone while they’re speaking lets them know they have your attention.

3. Respond when appropriate - Don’t interrupt! You should be engaging in conversation and letting the other person know you are truly listening.

... Read moreHey everyone! I used to think I was a good listener, but honestly, I was often just waiting for my turn to speak. It wasn't until I started actively working on my listening skills that I realized how much deeper my connections could become. The original post touches on some brilliant points, and I wanted to expand on them to share my journey, especially after seeing the advice about focusing on 3 HABITS THAT MAKE YOU A BETTER LISTENER. First, let's talk about the big one: PUT DOWN YOUR PHONE. It sounds so obvious, right? But how many times have you been in a conversation, and your phone buzzes, or you just instinctively pick it up? For me, it took conscious effort. I started placing my phone in another room or face down when talking to my friends or partner. It’s not just about the physical act; it’s about signaling to your brain that this conversation is the only thing that matters right now. When I stopped letting notifications pull me away, I noticed people opened up more, feeling truly valued. Next up, MAKE EYE CONTACT. This is more than just staring into someone's soul! It's about showing you're engaged and present. I used to find myself looking around, getting distracted by things in the room. Now, I try to maintain a comfortable, natural gaze, breaking it occasionally, just like a normal human interaction. This simple habit makes a huge difference in conveying sincerity and attentiveness. You pick up so much more from body language and facial expressions when you're truly looking at someone. And then, RESPOND WHEN APPROPRIATE. This isn't just about avoiding interruptions. It's about showing you've actually processed what they've said. Instead of immediately jumping in with my opinion or a solution, I've learned to pause. Sometimes, I'll even rephrase what they said in my own words, like, “So, if I'm understanding you correctly, you're feeling frustrated because...?” This technique, called reflective listening, is incredibly powerful. It not only clarifies understanding but also makes the speaker feel genuinely heard and validated. Beyond these fantastic 3 habits, I've also found immense value in practicing patience and withholding judgment. Sometimes, when someone is sharing something, my mind would immediately jump to solutions or criticisms. I had to train myself to just listen without the pressure to fix or judge. Often, people just want to vent or share, not get advice. Creating a safe space where they can speak freely, knowing they won't be interrupted or judged, has been a game-changer for my relationships. It allows for a deeper level of trust and intimacy. These seemingly small changes in how I listen have had a profound impact. My conversations are richer, my relationships are stronger, and I feel more connected to the people in my life. Give these habits a try – you might be surprised at how transformative they can be!
