Frennamy Test
February 2, 2026
Let’s continue this ongoing test to identify if someone in your life might be a friennamy.
Examples:
• They celebrate your setbacks more than your wins.
• They give backhanded compliments disguised as support.
• They discourage your goals while pretending to be “realistic.”
• They compete with you instead of cheering for you.
• They disappear when you succeed but reappear when you struggle.

In my experience, recognizing a friennamy can be challenging because their behavior often masks itself as concern or realism. One pattern I noticed was that these friends often subtly shift from supportive to competitive, especially when I achieved success. For instance, they might say things like "That's a nice try, but is that really realistic?" which initially seemed like honest advice but slowly felt like discouragement. Another telling sign is their reactions to your ups and downs. While true friends celebrate your good news enthusiastically, friennamies seem oddly silent or even distant during your achievements. Conversely, they tend to appear more when you face difficulties, sometimes under the guise of offering help but really feeding off your vulnerabilities. It's also common for friennamies to use backhanded compliments—comments that seem supportive on the surface but actually highlight flaws or shortcomings. For example, "You're surprisingly good at this!" may sound like praise but implies low expectations. Identifying these behaviors has helped me set healthier boundaries. Instead of ignoring the warning signs, acknowledging them allowed me to realign my social circle with people who genuinely support and uplift me. If you suspect someone might be a friennamy, observe how they respond over time to your successes and struggles, and trust your instincts about their intentions.
