5 year old library picks
I let the loose to pick whatever they want each week. They each get 5 and we read them all week!

Choosing books for young children can be both exciting and challenging, especially when aiming to make reading a fun and educational experience. From my own homeschooling journey, letting my kids pick their own library books each week has been a game changer. It encourages their independence and fosters a genuine love of reading. For 5 year olds, books that combine humor, relatable characters, and simple science concepts tend to capture their attention best. For instance, Mo Willems’ Elephant & Piggie series is a hit among young children; its playful dialogue and expressive illustrations make reading interactive and entertaining. Additionally, introducing hands-on science books, like those by Nate Ball, helps deepen curiosity through practical experiments, making learning memorable. Titles that subtly include life cycles or scientific discoveries can complement homeschool curricula effectively. I also find that mixing in award-winning picture books and bestsellers keeps the reading list fresh and engaging. This mixture exposes children to diverse storytelling styles and themes, enhancing their comprehension skills. Making a habit of reading all five selected books over the week allows comprehension to build naturally and discussions to flourish. Library visits become a special weekly event where children get to feel in control of their reading choices while discovering new interests. Stickers or other small rewards inside some books add extra excitement. For parents homeschooling kindergarteners, this approach not only supports literacy development but also reduces decision fatigue while keeping kids motivated and eager to learn.
