Today was the day – my microlocs retie! There's nothing quite like the feeling of freshly retied locs, and I wanted to share a bit about my experience and what I've learned about the whole process. If you're new to microlocs or just wondering about retie maintenance, you're in the right place! First off, why are reties so crucial for microlocs? Well, as our natural hair grows, new growth emerges from the scalp. Without regular reties, your microlocs can start to thin at the roots, unravel, or even merge with neighboring locs. This can lead to breakage and undo all the hard work you’ve put into your loc journey. My loctician usually recommends a retie every 4-6 weeks, depending on my hair growth and how active I've been. You'll know it's time when you start seeing significant new growth and your locs feel a bit looser or messier at the scalp. My retie routine usually starts a day or two before my appointment. I make sure to thoroughly wash and condition my hair. It’s important to make sure your hair is clean and free of product buildup, but also well-moisturized. I typically use a clarifying shampoo followed by a hydrating conditioner, making sure to rinse thoroughly. I then let my hair air dry or gently blow-dry it on a cool setting. Having clean, detangled (as much as possible for locs!) hair makes the retie process smoother and less stressful for both me and my loctician. During the retie itself, my loctician carefully separates each loc at the root, working through any new growth. There are a few different methods, but for microlocs, interlocking is very common. This involves using a small tool or finger to pull the end of the loc through the new growth at the base of the loc, effectively tightening it. It’s a meticulous process, often taking several hours, depending on the number and size of your locs and the amount of new growth. It's a great time to catch up on podcasts or just relax! While it can feel a little tender at the scalp, especially towards the end, it shouldn't be painful. If it is, communicate with your loctician. Remember, healthy tension is good, excessive tension is not! After the retie, post-care is just as important. I always make sure to keep my scalp moisturized with a light oil or rosewater spray to prevent dryness and itching. Sleeping with a satin bonnet or pillowcase is non-negotiable to protect my fresh retie and prevent frizz. I also try to avoid heavy styling for the first week to let my scalp recover and the locs settle. Hydration is key, both internally by drinking plenty of water, and externally by spritzing my locs. It's truly amazing how a good retie transforms your microlocs. They look neater, feel stronger, and you can see all that beautiful new growth securely locked in. It’s an investment in your hair's health and appearance, and totally worth it for maintaining those gorgeous microlocs!
