New York
2024/10/24 Edited to

... Read moreAs much as I love the iconic sights of New York City, there's a special thrill in peeling back the layers and discovering the places where real New Yorkers live, work, and play. I'm always on the hunt for those hidden gems, the neighborhoods that offer a different kind of magic away from the tourist crush. If you're like me, ready to dive deeper than Times Square, then these spots are absolutely worth adding to your itinerary. My first recommendation for escaping the usual hustle and bustle is a trip uptown to Washington Heights. This neighborhood truly feels like a breath of fresh air. When I first visited, I was completely enchanted by how much green space there is. The highlight for me, without a doubt, was exploring Fort Tryon Park. It’s not just a park; it’s an experience. Walking through the stone arched walkways and seeing the beautiful medieval architecture of The Met Cloisters made me feel like I’d stepped into another world. There’s a particular dark stone arched tunnel that opens up to a stunning view of the Hudson River that always takes my breath away. It's the perfect place for a peaceful walk, a picnic, or just to sit and soak in the incredible vistas. Beyond the park, Washington Heights itself has so much character, from browsing independent stores like Word Up Community Bookstore to stepping back in time at the historic Morris-Jumel Mansion. It’s a neighborhood with a rich history and a strong community feel, offering a truly authentic slice of Upper Manhattan life. Next on my list is the incredibly vibrant Sunset Park in Brooklyn. This area is a melting pot of cultures, and you can feel the energy the moment you arrive. What really draws me here is the sheer diversity – you can wander through Brooklyn's bustling Chinatown on 8th Avenue, discover unique Japanese goods at Japan Village in Industry City, or savor incredible Latin American flavors along 5th Avenue. Speaking of food, you absolutely must try the tacos from The King of Meat or Tacos El Bronco food truck – they’re a game-changer! And of course, no visit to Sunset Park is complete without heading up to the park itself for that unforgettable panoramic view of the New York City skyline. It’s particularly magical around sunset (fitting, right?), when the city lights begin to twinkle. Industry City, too, offers so much more than just shopping; it’s a creative hub with breweries, art installations, and unique events that make for a fantastic afternoon. Finally, for a quieter, charming escape, I adore Windsor Terrace, nestled right next to Prospect Park. This pocket-sized neighborhood has such a cozy, residential vibe that makes you feel instantly at home. I love strolling down streets lined with colorful Victorian-style townhouses, each with its own unique character. Its proximity to Prospect Park means endless opportunities for outdoor activities, whether it's a leisurely walk, a bike ride, or just relaxing by the lake. For a unique night out, catching a flick at Nitehawk Cinema is a must – they serve delicious meals right to your seat, which is such a treat. And if you’re a film buff, you can even find the exact block where parts of 'Dog Day Afternoon' were filmed! Don't miss out on the local eateries either; grab a Chicago-style hot dog from the aptly named Dog Day Afternoon, or enjoy some fantastic Mexican cuisine at Cena. Windsor Terrace truly feels like Brooklyn's best-kept secret, offering a relaxed pace that’s rare to find so close to Manhattan. Trust me, these neighborhoods are where you'll make some of your most memorable NYC discoveries!

looking to get off the tourist track in Greece?
Greece has alooooot more to offer than just Santorini and Mykonos (as dreamy as they are). If you’re craving something a little more off the mainstream path—where the beaches are just as stunning, the villages still feel authentic, and the pace is slower—these islands should be on your radar.
